Plants
Do NOT EAT any wild plants. If you identify them incorrectly, it can result in death if eaten. Only under expert botanist supervision should you attempt this (experts like me who were botanists).
Being a botanist for 2 years with the Ministry of Natural resources and trained by Dr. Newmaster of Guelph University (the author/reference of many ID books), I have acquired some great resources for identifying plants. Although in my eyes, nothing replaces my ID books, some of these apps are decent at identifying in a pinch.

Specific Resources by Plant Form
Please select the form below to get resources to ID. Note that I have not included resources on Grasses. Some common grasses are in some of the field guides I linked to, but proper grass ID (and sphagnum mosses requires microscopes or special equipment and knowledge that is over and above k-12 education. If you are interested, please contact me.
Trees
Whether they have needles or broad leaves, use the key(s) below to discover a tree you found. Note: many invasive and planted non-native trees are not included in the key.
Use my key for most of the year. The winter tree key, although not one that I have created, is a great resource for when leaves are not present in the winter. Test your tree knowledge.
My tree key - Complete Ontario
Great for southern and central Ontario. Great dichotomous key.
Covers 99% of Native species. Invasives and planted foreign species are not included.
My Toronto ID Sheet: Alt.
With Actual sizes of leaves, twigs and fruit for common trees in Toronto. This is not a complete list as my original key but should cover 90% of what you find in schoolyards and green spaces.
Winter Tree Key - Branch ID
Great for the winter. Although I did not create this key, it is decent for winter ID of twigs.
Bark Key to come...
Common Shrubs of Southern Ontario. Adapted from the ROM book, I simplified things geographically and omitted marsh and bog plants.
Trees and Shrubs of Ontario Website
Summary, books and ID. No good keys, but a good resource.
Forest Plants of Central Ontario
Great field ID book for Cent. Ont. Great keys and info for a small handy field guide.
Herbacious Plants
Although extremely seasonal, you can identify many of these plants by leaves, flowers or fruit.
An App (like the leafsnap or picture this) is the best way for most to identify the immense number of forbs and aquatics that are in Ontario. I may get around to making a key for common ones if I get enough requests. Please contact me if interested.
These two books are super handy for most common plants with great keys within.
Species lists, reccommended books and other resources.
Key for some common Winter weeds.
Ferns and Mosses
Although Sphagnum mosses have some complications to identification, ferns and most simple mosses are a pleasure to identify. The somewhat technical Ferns of Ontario is the most complete resource for identification. The Forest plants of central Ontario book has the best user friendly keys and info for both ferns and mosses. I will get around to making a key for some common Toronto Mosses. My fern key is below.

A little sciency and technical, but is the one complete resource for Canadian Ferns!
Great handy book for common fern/moss ID.
