My design showcases mental health and four aspects that negatively impact one's mental health. In my design is a poster focused into four quadrants; one quad represents school which can lead to long term stress and negatively and the second represents how being socially inactive can affect your mental health. Basically your phone means a lot more to you than you think. The third quad represents failure, failure has always held a place when it comes to mental health and will always affect one’s mental health in a negative way. The fourth represents time and how time especially when wasted can affect our mental health. Time is the one thing we can never gain back and must be cherished which is why time is the fourth thing represented in my design. My design inspiration comes a little bit from the trauma and resilience video and works on the negatives about mental health.
My design represents the appreciation of BIPOC women embracing their natural hair. BIPOC women have never been the beauty standard and have often altered their natural appearances to fit into the beauty standard. I was inspired by the 5th moment from the 28 Moments of Canadian Black History video. What really drew me to the video was when Martiza was explaining her occupation and talking about how there wasn't enough representation with Black women and their hair, and I completely agree. As someone who is BIPOC it’s hard to find people with the same hair texture and style as you, so it’s hard to fall in love with your natural self when you’re an odd one out. My animation displays a BIPOC woman with very big curly hair that is just flowing all over the place and that just showcase how beautiful her natural hair is. Whether it’s coils, kinks or curls, all BIPOC women have beautiful hair in their natural state.
My design is a replica of the Black lives matters ‘‘logo’’. Throughout the years there have been a large number of incidents where innocent people of color were and still are being thrown into prison for crimes they did not commit. There are still some of these people being put on death row which is crazy. The stories about George stinney Jr (executed at 14, falsely accused) and The central 5 (5 teenage males black fasley accused of rape, spent 7-13 years in prison) stuck out to me when chosing this topic. I decided to do the Black lives matter logo because it is simple but has a powerful meaning.
Throughout the many years of injustice I have chosen to showcase my design as a reflection of how mental health is very important in every community but especially the Black community. In spite of everything that has happened during this pandemic it has shown that there is time to change how everybody thinks about topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement as well as how Black Futures Matter. The education that we need to succeed in this world and the education to overcome racism is also in front of us. We all need to understand how to utilize it together instead of using it against each other, to band together since we are all human beings no matter what color or race.
