Life is an endeavour in which one faces constant dilemmas and complications. If one allows such problems to overcome oneself, undoubtedly it will lead to trauma, along with ruin. However, to avoid the aforesaid, resilience is key. If one uses their strength, one can stand up to anything. This extends to social issues, where society must be resilient with respect to social issues. Only then will we achieve social change and justice among society. A helix is a shape that represents this, particularly resiliency, and instills hope within many to ultimately stand up for righteousness. Thus, through means of a plethora of functions, my graph depicts this symbol of resilience in an inspiring fashion. Moreover, by animating the graph, I designed it so that the helix would disconnect, and then reconnect. This symbolizes how society must work together to be resilient and ultimately achieve social justice. If the cohesion is lacking, then consequently society’s resilience will weaken. Additionally, a muscle was illustrated on the right of the helix to signify strength and bravery, which is vital in this unjust world. As, if we lack strength, how will society progress?
My animation is a representation of what Black people around the world have been protesting for years because of the racial injustice suffered by coloured skin people around the world. The phrase “Black Lives Matter” has reached out to many more since the death of George Floyd and brings a very strong meaning so I decided to make my animation represent the BLM movement.
Africville, an area in Halifax, Nova Scotia where migrant slaves from America settled there and created a community. However, even after beginning a new chapter of their life, the past still haunts them. White residents of the area began to harass and discriminate against them. Yet they still persevered. With the city of Halifax not even providing them with their basic human rights the residents of Africville still strived to make this their home. After years of countless battles against the racism directed towards them by the White residents of Halifax they began to lose their home due to the income gap between them and the White residents. With their homes being bought and their land being stripped from their rights the residents of Africville had no other choice but to move. My social justice animation is to showcase their perseverance and power as they fought for their community till the end. It now serves as a monument towards the hardships Black people had to face during their settlement in Canada.
