After reading "The Skin You Live In", students looked in a mirror and utilized paint to mix colours to match their skin for their self portraits. Seeing their self portraits up on the walls gave my Kindergarten students a sense of pride and ownership over their classroom.
In this example, students have the opportunity to share their math strategies they have worked on with their group throughout our math problem solving time. Students had the choice to choose the material they were working and they have the opportunity to share and learn from each other.
Students were tasked to create a electrical haunted house that built on their knowledge of circuits. They were to design their room and wire their room so that a switch would trigger a light or a sound.
Students were challenged with a scavenger hunt and used Google Earth to locate the different landforms across our earth. They used their Google slides to reflect their learning and their final assessment was through use of Google Form.
I have strived to provide unique collaborative experiences for my students by partnering with educators across the TDSB. These experiences have allowed my students to connect with others from a multitude of different cultures, experiences and backgrounds and work together. This includes a Google Hangout Collaboration Project with our Grade 4 Book Talk Buddies at Maurice Cody and our Crime Scene Reading Strategy Inquiry with 3 other TDSB classes. Our classes met up to discuss on Google Hangouts and we shared our ideas together using FlipGrid, Google Slides and more.
In this project, students were designing a prototype of renewable sources invention. They built on their prior knowledge of renewable sources and worked together to create an innovation that would harness the energy. This group chose to make a prototype of their invention and a website to market their product.
I have been involved in many different extracurriculars including, but not limited to: FIRST Lego League Robotics Team, Track & Field, Coding Club, Junior Choir, Cardio Fitness Club, and Ultimate Frisbee coach. I received a nomination for "Coach of the Year" from my fellow coaches and my FLL team in my first year coaching the team.
To prepare students for their ever changing future, I incorporate coding opportunities into the classroom as much as I can. In geometry, students used Dash to code the perimeter of various shapes. In primary grade, I have worked with students to engage in unplugged coding activities. After reading a story, students were to code the character through the settings on the grid.
I organized and facilitated various school events such as School-wide Track and Field Day, Family STEAM night, Family Mental Health Night, Welcome To Kindergarten and Early Literacy Night.
This video highlights a collaborative STEM project between my Grade 4/5 class and the Grade 3 class at RJ Lang. I believe these types of experiences to be valuable and important. These problems are based on real-life experiences and they promote students to work together collaboratively, be creative and innovative.
