Finished Artwork
4th graders have been working on a project I call, "The Northern Lights". We start by watching a really cool video on YouTube channel Freeschool titled "All about Auroras". (see link at right) Next, I introduce students to a messy art medium...chalk pastels. The chalk is going to create the shadow behind the mountain line. Students also used white paint to create the base of the mountain and black oil pastel to make trees at the mountain base. Students learned about the illusion of space and the terms: background, middleground and foreground. Some trees appear larger in the foreground, and other trees seem smaller in the background. Students finished the artwork with a small amount of white paint using a splatter paint technique to add the effect of snow fall. Fabulous results!

4th grade students get inspiration by learning about Brazilian born artist Romero Britto.

Student watched a short video to learn about the artist Romero Britto. (see link for video) We discussed his use of bright colors and heavy black line. He also uses the heart shape in many of his pieces and this is why students usually work on this project around Valentine's Day. I created four Romero Britto inspired drawings with pencil and gave them a heavy black outline using india ink in a paint dauber. Student used solid tempera paint to fill in each section and then added Britto style details with paint pens.
