Design your own Lego figure
We had a short activity week due to virtual days, so I found a quick activity for Mrs. Graban's third grade class. Students were given a lego figure template and a handout with ideas for facial expressions and hair design. As always, student were encouraged to be creative when making their own Lego figure. They turned out great!
3rd grade Winter Birch Trees
Third graders are learning about birch trees and cardinals to make a winter scene. Students learned that birch trees are not commonly seen growing in Alabama, but can be found in more areas as far north as Alaska and Canada . To make the birch trees, students used a washable black marker to draw eight vertical lines on their paper. (see below) I put an X on the section that would not become a birch tree. Students added more short horizontal lines to give the appearance of the dark markings for on the trees. Next, students used a brush to apply water to the tree lines. We call this "waking up the marker line". When the water touches the makers line the color bleeds slightly giving the paper a greyish tint. (see video link below) When the tree paper is dry, student cut out the trees and discard the papers with the X. Finally, students cut one of the trees into pieces to make branches for their nest and a cardinal bird. Adding eggs to the nest is optional. White oil pastels are used for adding snow to the background.
*Note: This is usually a three day project. (three 35 minute class periods)
Cityscape Row houses
Third graders learned about different types of basic architecture. We also looked at row houses in Charleston, South Carolina and noticed the types of roofs, windows, doors and paint color. Students also learned that an an architect is a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings.
