Welcome Winter!
For the January winter art project, first grade students made a paper self-portrait. First, students chose a color for their hat and scarf and cut them out. Next, I traced each students' hands in the shape of two mittens. Students made lines and designs on the mittens using oil pastels and then painted over them with liquid watercolor. (oil pastel resist) Students chose a skin color for their face and I gave them some ideas for easy facial expressions. I also drew the lines for hair and the students used paint or oil pastels for the hair. We assembled all paper pieces onto a 12X18 piece of construction paper and students added snowflakes in the background. I LOVE the way they turned out!
*Note - Credit for the idea goes to Cassie Stephens over at her blog.
Mrs. G's First Graders made tissue paper hearts.
Mrs. Wright's student, Madison Fralic, visited the art room to make a special valentine.
Mrs. Wright's kiddos learned about warm and cool colors in the art room to create these fabulous hearts for Valentine's Day. Oil pastel crayons were separated into warm and cool colors, then students chose a color path. They colored in hearts completely and then blended the crayons using baby oil on a cotton ball. Beautiful!
Only One You
First graders learned about artist and illustrator Linda Kranz. Linda has written and illustrated a number of books and journals that focus on the importance of being yourself, using your creativity, noticing nature’s beauty, and making the world a better place. You can learn more about her here (https://www.lindakranz.com/)
I really love the story, Only One You, so that is the book we focused on for this project! Student studied Linda's illustrations of the fish from the book. Linda's fish are painted rocks, so they don't have any fins or tails. I drew a fish with a paint dauber filled with india ink, and made copies for each student. Students were encouraged to add lines and designs to the inside of the shape of the fish in the style of Linda Kranz. I provided a sample handout so students could get some ideas and inspiration when designing their fish. Students colored with Kwik Stix solid tempera paint. It give nice bright color to the paper. Take a look!
