The Scientific Method is a step-by-step process scientists use to ask questions, investigate problems, and find reliable answers based on evidence.
In MYP Science, it helps you plan, carry out, and evaluate a fair and valid investigation.
Using the Scientific Method ensures that:
your investigation is organized and logical,
your results are reliable, and
your conclusions are supported by evidence.
Observation
Notice a phenomenon or problem in the natural world.
Question
Ask a clear, focused, and testable scientific question based on your observation.
Research
Gather background information from reliable sources to understand what is already known.
Hypothesis
Make a prediction that answers your question. A good hypothesis follows the format:
If… then… because…
Experiment / Investigation
Design and carry out an experiment or investigation to test your hypothesis.
Identify variables (independent, dependent, and controlled).
Collect data carefully and safely.
6. Data Analysis
Organize and analyze the data using tables, graphs, or calculations to identify patterns.
7. Conclusion
Explain what the results show and state whether they support or reject your hypothesis.
8. Evaluation and Communication
Reflect on limitations, suggest improvements, and communicate your findings through a report, presentation, or poster.
