To consider a hypothesis as testable, some essential criteria must be met:
There must be a possibility to prove that the hypothesis is true.
There must be a possibility to prove that the hypothesis is false.
The results of the hypothesis must be reproducible by repeating the experiment under the same conditions.
These criteria are extremely important. Without them, the research process may become vague, poorly structured, and lack clear scientific objectives (Helmenstine A., 2020).
It is important to note that a key scientific practice is to design experiments that attempt to prove the hypothesis wrong. Trying only to prove a hypothesis right can lead to biased results and weak scientific conclusions.
Your hypothesis must be written using an if–then statement, following this format:
If (a specific and measurable action is taken),
then (a specific and measurable outcome is expected).
Make sure that:
The if part includes a measurable independent variable
The then part includes a measurable dependent variable
Both variables are realistic and reachable within your experiment
After writing the if–then statement, you must explain why you expect this result.
This explanation should be based on scientific knowledge, not opinions or guesses.
