1st Grade - Homework

Math Homework

In Grade 1 at TCPS, homework will be assigned 2 times per week and will be a review of skills practiced in school. The activities are meant to be completed independently; however, reviewing the directions with your child is encouraged. Assignments should not take longer than 20 minutes. If your child is having difficulty, please write a note (or send an email) so that I may follow-up at school. If you notice an error, you may encourage your child to “take another look,” but do not expect perfection; the mistakes will help inform my teaching. Reminders about the value (and expectation) of legibility are important, too.

Nightly Reading

Students are encouraged to read with, or to, an older family member nightly. This can involve many variations including reading to your child, alternating reading pages with them, or having them read to you. In addition to giving valuable family time together and helping your child strengthen their reading skills, reading together helps build language skills and vocabulary, helps students learn about new subjects, and helps reinforce empathy and emotional regulation.

Sharing Projects

Our monthly sharing projects introduce students to the concept of public speaking and give them opportunities to practice in front of their classmates. There are nine formal monthly sharing topics per year such as special talents, family traditions, etc., as well as informal sharing throughout the year. These projects are completed at home and then brought to school and presented on a scheduled Sharing Day for that month.
