Teaching Goals In-Depth
1. Students are provided with accessible literature
To me, accessible literature means the following:
Literature that is affordable
Literature that is available in multiple forms (visual, auditory, digital, etc.)
Literature that is culturally relevant
Literature that is representative (of my students’ interests, communities, identities)
2. Students can confidently facilitate and participate in discourses within & beyond the classroom
This teaching goal aims to ensure that my students develop and maintain an authentic voice in the classroom. Allowing students to facilitate their own discussions in class allows the students to recognize their agency within the classroom as well.
3. Students can think critically about academic content, their surrounding worlds, & themselves
This goal aims to develop empathy among my students and allow them to recognize their role as a learner in the classroom and beyond. If accomplished, this goal will teach my students the difficulty and necessity of allowing one’s perspective to change and transform over time.
