During the pandemic shutdown, Irene has been invited to teach several senior community groups.

Her first book, Beyond Silence: Chinese Canadian Literature in English won Gabrielle Roy Award for Criticism in 1997. Her latest collection of poetry is entitled Salt in My Life (2019).

Preparation for the Art Workshop:

The students need to have the basic art tools and material:

1-1. One Chinese painting brush; if brand new, it should be soaked in cold water an hour before the class.

1-2. Alternatively, one flat-head oil painting brush, or one broad-head black colour marker.

2-1. One bottle of Chinese ink;

2-2. Alternatively, black water colour, black acrylic colour, or black oil paint.

3-1. Newsprint paper;

3-2. Alternatively, any other paper that absorbs water fast, non-glossy paper, such as water-colour paper.

#1- #3: You can find cheap painting brushes in packages for $3-$4, broad-head black ink marker, water-colour paper, and acrylic and water colour at Dollarama stores across the city. You can also purchase the above at art stores, such as Curry’s and DeSerres. Alternatively, you can order supplies off amazon if there is a stay-at-home order.

Preparation for your desk/table before the class:

4-1. Two layers of old newspaper used as underpadding on the desk or table;

4-2. A small container of cold water;

4-3. A small old plate which is no longer useful in the kitchen, or a flat, plastic container came with food-package

Students can either paint during the demo, or paint on their own after watching the workshop.

· Duration of the Art Workshop can be 60-90 minutes, depending on the school.
