Throughout this website, you may have come across some words that are not quite understandable.
Below are ten scientific terms and definitions to strengthen your vocabulary!
Definitions:
Active Transport: The movement of substances across the cell membrane using energy (ATP), from a low concentration to a high concentration.
Adenosine Triphosphate: ATP is the primary energy source for cells.
Cell Membrane: The cell membrane keeps all the organelles inside the cell while at the same time keeping unwanted materials out of the cell.
Eukaryote: An organism consisting of cells that have a nucleus and other parts called organelles.
Organelle: A small part inside a cell that does a specific job (like an organ in the human body, but for a cell).
Osmosis: The process of water moving from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a semi-permeable membrane.
Passive Transport: The movement of substances across the cell membrane without using energy, from high concentration to a low concentration.
Prokaryote: An organism made of cells that do not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles.
Semi-permeable Membrane: A barrier that selectively allows certain small substances to pass through while restricting larger molecules.
Solute: A dissolved substance.
