In this lesson students will learn some of the many definitions and measurements of poverty. Students will be introduced to the close reading strategy and employ it to examine a text regarding the measurements of poverty and their pros and cons.
In this lesson students will be introduced to some of the many causes of poverty in Canada. Students will focus on point of view and perspective-taking as they use the close reading strategy to examine and compare and contrast different reasons for the causes of poverty in Canada.
In this lesson students will be introduced to the many faces of poverty and will discover that poverty does not equally affect all demographics of the population. Before examining texts, students will review the function of text features. Finally, students will reflect on social cohesion and the importance of community as found in scripture.
In this lesson students will be introduced to the concepts of charity and justice. They will learn the difference between these concepts and why it is important to be involved in both when helping those in need.
In this section students will be challenged to put into action what they have learned in this unit to help solve a social justice issue and make a difference in their school, community, and/or the world.
