Radio Report
Intro -
For today’s inquiry, I will be discussing how we can stop the numbers of faulty radios, and more details about it. Ever since my mum bought her new car last year, we have had to change our car radio 3 times. I will be talking about the history of the radio, what we are doing about broken radios, and what is going to happen to the radio in the future. By the end of this, I hope you will understand a little more about the radio and what to do if it breaks down.
RQ 1: Why were radios invented -
The first radio was developed in World War I to communicate between ships and as a call for help when a ship is in danger. It was a very simple communication to others during the war. When the ships were trying to get in touch, it was very buggy, and they had many problems hearing each other. Since they could not hear each other, they typically used morse code when heading to battle or in danger. When the radio was first released to the public in the 1930s, people thought that everyone would fight over it and get competitive over it because it was so special and unique at the time.
RQ 2: When did radios get built into cars -
Though today most people have radios installed into their cars, almost 100 years ago not that many people had even heard of such a thing. In 1930, the Galvin brothers released the first car-radio commercial with a $130 car built-in radio. It was in the 1900s that the radio had been created. In 1904, when mobile devices did not exist, we had the radio instead. The American Inventor Lee de Forest did a demonstration of what the newly built car radio could do at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The radio got their first live broadcasting on Schenectady, N. Y Christmas Eve 1906.
RQ 3: Who was the first person to build the radio -
In 1911, Chevrolet was the first car company to put a car with a built-in radio on sale, but for a very expensive price. The first car radio wasn't the flashest and was taking up most of the car’s space. Its batteries were very large, so the driver had to stuff them under the front seat. On top of that, there were two large speakers that took almost all of the seats in the back, so it was just the driver's seat. One of the founders of the company was William Crapo Durant. Another was also the founder of General Motors, Swiss racer, and engineer Louis Chevrolet. By 1920, Chevrolet got famous for their car with a radio. As their popularity rose, this gave them great ideas for new designs on cars.
RQ 4: Would it be possible to fix radios ourselves -
From the radios that are in our cars today, we build them on printed circuit boards. With the circuit boards, they can only get repaired by trained technicians. Without going to a trained technician, you can run tests to see if your car radio is holding up with replacements you can do by yourself. You will need a screwdriver, wrenches, electronic contact cleaner, denatured alcohol, soldering iron and soldering. To know how your car radio is broken, it will make a high pitch noise. Make sure to check the wires to see how they’re doing too.
RQ 5: What are we doing to fix radios today -
When your radio in your car is playing really hard to hear music. When that happens, it's probably just the radio reception that is not really working that day. If your radio reception is not working, it's probably because of a weak signal or something trying to/interfering with the signal. If the radio is cutting in and out, it’s probably because of some loose wiring inside it. You can fix it yourself by just looking right to it, and you might find somewhere that might give away where the loose wiring might be.
RQ 6: Will there be more companies with a variety of radios -
With the radio, some varieties of the AM/FM radio are slowly dying out year by year, with people moving to online radio. According to some websites, they believe that there will be 15,000 commercial radio stations in the US, 2019. These numbers are double the number that there were in 1970. The variety of radio stations is small, but they keep growing each day with the increasing number of people listening to the radios. Countries get lots of different radio stations for different types of people. The largest number of radio stations in a country is the US, with 130 stations.
RQ 7: Should all radios be the same -
Simultaneous Broadcasting is where the frequency pairs to the radios close to each other over a very wide area.
I think this graph shows that most people have the normal car radio. Although the number of people listening to online radio has increased it hasn’t gone over AM/FM radio. When there are specific overseas car radios, it can sometimes cause them to interfere with the NZ Radio Spectrum. To stop this from happening, overseas radios have to follow the NZ standards and have compliance labels.
RQ 8: Will radios get better in the future -
Although there are lots of people with radios in their car, their future does not seem to be going anywhere soon. Although the radio has been completed, the number of people using new varieties of radios has grown throughout the 2000s. With the internet, it kept on developing a lot faster than the radio did, and there was a point where people started to drift away from the radio. Although they were losing numbers, it came back up as more people bought cars and installed radios in them. For the radio industry, the way to keep up to the top is by finding new ways to keep the radio running and popular. Because of all the new ways, every industry leader is always competing against each other for the best car radio and to be the most popular industry around the world.
Expert Info -
When I went to Repco in town to ask about what they do with a broken/faulty radio they said this : “When a customer comes in and tells us about their broken radio we get a team to try and fix it, if we can not fix it we send it to the manufacturer to see if they can figure it out. Most of the time the manufacturer figures it out and helps the customer. Once it is repaired the manufacturer brings it back to us and we hand the repaired radio back to the customer.”.
Conclusion -
In this inquiry, we have covered the past, present and future of the radio. I think the best way to fix radios is by going to a trained technician. They know what they are doing and how to fix it. The only downside is that it costs a bit of money to get it fixed, and takes about an hour for them to fix it.
