Mission to Mars

Chapter 1 - The arrival

The trip was long, but I eventually got there. I am very aware that I will be spending the rest of my life on planet Mars. I have been given specific tasks to do by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) while I am living on Mars. Most of these missions consist of exploring including studying and farming. However, the main goal I have set is to find out if Mars is suitable for mankind.

It has been a couple of months now, and finally, I have set up my base including trying to finish constructing my farm. In my manual, I have been told very clearly that I must set up my farm quickly in order to start producing food and oxygen. It was not so long before I discovered that Mars is a very cold and windy area. I am getting really tedious just having robots to talk to, but I have to say, that I am looking forward to the end of the year when I can start exploring the planet.

Chapter 2 - Exploring

Wow! I couldn’t believe it. After I finished setting up the communication machine I found out that I have spent a year on Mars. Therefore, I am going to start exploring Mars as soon as I can. I haven’t seen the base for what feels like weeks. However, I have been surprised because I have found a gigantic water source underground. The only problem is I can‘t physically get to it. I look on my map which tells me that I can see Mount Olympus Mons. I start to lure down my suction pipe to collect water when my helmet starts to beep rapidly indicating that something is approaching from my left-hand side. As I started to turn, I could work out a shadow coming from inside a cave. It felt as though an ice cube had slid into my stomach. Still concentrating on the shadow, I moved my hands to grab my lazer. It felt like the figure was getting closer and closer, but to my surprise, I saw something very interesting.

Chapter 3 - The Creature

It was an interesting creature that reminded me of animals back on planet Earth. It was very small but was fascinating to watch. It had two large tails on its backside and another where the head is normally placed. It looked to me that its tails were used as a means of getting around. I watched it move to the crack in the ground where the water was flowing. It lured it’s hand like mouths and started to drink. After the creature drank the water, it started to approach me, but instead of harming me, it gestured me to follow it. I was walking steadily, keeping myself very alert with the surroundings. I started seeing a source of light in the distance but when I got closer I figured out that the light was magma. The magma really heated the place up. The creature directed my head towards the corner where many rovers lay. I saw him looking very sad, and realised that he was lonely just like I was. I tried to indicate for him to follow me to the base, but it didn't look like he understood. I decided to head back to the base when my helmet started beeping rapidly again. I turned around to see the creature trying to catch up. It looked like the little creature wanted to come with me after all. I decided to name him Metro after my old rocketship.

Chapter 4 - Finding my diary again

It has nearly been a century now, I am surprised that I'm still alive to write this. I have enjoyed most of my life on Mars with my pal Metro and have completed all my missions. I found out that Mars could be suitable for us to live on but it wouldn’t be possible for many years due to time and money. I found out that Metro is a very rare creature but I was able to find him a partner. In fact, I soon learnt that Metro’s life-span is double the average humans. My time on Mars has flown life a rollercoaster, whereby I had my up’s but I had my down’s but in the end, I had to keep moving on. My rollercoaster is starting to end but a new astronaut is supposed to be coming soon to replace me. NASA has asked me to help this man adapt and show him around. Thinking about this makes me miss home and the old memories with my family and friends. I still remember getting the email after my wife died, informing me that I have been selected to go to Mars. My father always told me that I should always chase my dreams. I have really enjoyed farming because it reminds me of home. I woke one morning to the sound of a rocket ship. I quickly got changed and ran to the docking bay thinking of how I should introduce myself.

Chapter 5 - The surprise

I arrived at the docking station just as the doors opened, I nearly fainted in shock. I sprinted to the communications room when NASA started calling me urgently. They told me there has been a major mistake, informing me that “the baby will have to stay with you” they quoted. I told them I will be dead soon and who would look after the baby? NASA hung up. I looked at the floor and tried to think about what to do. When all of a sudden I started to hear a faint cry.

I have never been able to have children as my wife had a problem before she died. I carried the baby carefully into the farm where I place him in my hammock thinking the air would be fresher around there. I called Metro and asked him what to do. I knew he understood when he almost reacted instantly. Metro called his kids because they came and started entertaining the baby. I mashed the baby some apple before running to my stash of books to find information that would teach me about looking after babies. I started to get along well with the baby, but subconsciously, a thought was starting to spark in my mind.

Chapter 6 - Goodbye

I now realise what I have to do. I thought it would be the best choice to send the baby back to planet Earth because I don't want him to spend the rest of his life on Mars, as I have. I do realise, in order to send the baby back to Earth, I will have to use all my power and resources, however, I am willing to sacrifice my life for this cause. Therefore, I had no time to waste.

I started by designing the rocket out of what I had. My good friend Metro and his family were in charge of building the rocket while the robots distracted the baby. The days went by and our rocket progressed. I went to pull down the switch that would load all the power and oxygen into the ship when suddenly, I remembered my diary. I ran to my room which was now in the communications block to get it and lay it on the babies lap. After Metro and his children said their goodbyes, I approached the baby in tears. I told the baby, he would be famous back on earth just like Harry Potter in the wizarding world. For centuries you will be known as “the boy who returned from Mars”. As I went to put it in stasis, the baby grinned at me. I closed the door and hurried to the power switch and pulled it firmly, then dashed to the launch button. I felt the air disappearing and my body starting to feel faint. I yelled to Metro to bury me at the top of Mount Olympus Mons. They shook their head and hugged me. I took one last breath and slammed the button. I saw the rocket starting to take off, then my vision was starting to go blank. I was dead before hitting the floor.

Extra - The baby grew up and was named Mars, and my diary became a resource used to create camera footages. My book is famous and sold all over the world.
