Introduction
Have you ever been looking through the Olympic channels and wondering, “what's that sport” or “why is that sport in their” Well today I’m going to tell you about irrelevant sports in the Olympics. In this report, I am going to be covering what makes an irrelevant sport, what's so bad about irrelevant sports, who decides what sports go into the Olympics, what does an irrelevant look like, mini criteria, what have we analysed so far, what is good about irrelevant sports what do the public think about irrelevant sports in the Olympics, mini interview, what do the IOC need to do now, conclusion. I hope you enjoy.
What makes an irrelevant sport?
Now you may be thinking to yourself, aren’t all sports relevant to the Olympics? If it is chosen to be in the Olympic games, you would think so, but this is actually untrue. In the 2020 summer Olympic games there were certain sports that pecked my interest, like base ball and handball. There is a reason why I think these sports are irrelevant, and both reasons are not the same. Why I think that hand ball is irrelevant, is because it isn’t the most popular sport. In fact, my dad only heard of it this term of Olympics. I also think that the base ball is irrelevant to the Olympics because, the only country that plays it is America.
What is bad about irrelevant sports in the Olympics?
I think that irrelevant sports in the Olympics are bad because it is a world wide competition. Over 100 million people watching the Olympic games live. My guess is that people don’t want to watch sports that they haven’t heard about, but there are good sides to irrelevant sports and we will get to them soon.
Who decides what sports are in or out of the Olympics?
There is a committee call the IOC ( International Olympic Committee). The committee was formed on the 23 June 1894. The committee is responsible for running the olympics, they provide everything the athletes need. Like the food, and clothes. They run the events, choose what sports are in the olympics, and pick what country are going to host the next olympics. I think that the IOC has tooo much power around what sports are in the olympics, I think that the public should choose through a world wide vote. This would make it so the public get to see the sports they like.
What does an irrelevant sport look like?
Sometimes its hard to see what an irrelevant sport is, so to help I have made a criteria so you can see and point out an irrelevant sport. To point out the criteria I have made 4 mini paragraphs discussing the 4 key points of my criteria. This criteria is also reflected by the olympic charter, the olympic charter is a set of rules that the IOC have to work by, and they have a criteria for the sports that they add
Has to be popular
With this, I think that it means that it has to be popular in a number of countries, the olympic charter says that for a sport to be added to the olympics, it has to be practices by men, in at least 75 countries and on 4 continents. And practices by woman in at least 40 countries , on 3 continent, I think this is a good standard.
Has to be modernised
Now with this one you maybe thinking that, there are so many sports add over a century ago, and that would be a lot of sports to get rid of. Now what I mean by moderised is has been brought up to 2020 standers. And isn’t still using old equipment invented decades ago.
Has to be well known
When I say it had to be popular, I meant that it had to have enough people, but theres no point in adding a sport that has that many people practising it and not that many people watching it, or even knowing about it. Did you know my dad only just found out about a sport in the olympics called handball, with was added in the 1936 olympics in berlin.
Can’t be prone to one country
What I mean by this is the fact that a lot of sports out of the olympics are only played in professionally in one country, and when those sports are added it gives that country an unfair advantage, for example take baseball, baseball is a sport only played professionally in america giving america an unfair advantage because they put forward people that have played for maybe all there life, vs people that would be that good because they don’t have it in there country. But it didn’t matter japan got gold.
What have we analyzed so far?
So far we have analyzed what an irrelevant sport is why it is bad for the olympics, we have gone over the IOC and what they do, and last we have been though the criteria I made based on the olympics charter verison, we have yet to analyze, what good irrelevant sports do for the olympics, what do the public think about the irrelevant sports in the olympics, and what do the IOC need to do now.
What good to irrelevant sports do to the olympics?
Even though I have so far talked about irrelevant sports as a bad thing, I am trying to make this report a non biased report, so will now talk about the binfits of irrelevant sports in the olympics. I think that because the olympics has a two week time period, so they add sports that suck up time until the bigger sports come. Another good thing about irrelevant sports is that because a lot of them haven’t been seen, or are rarely seen by a lot of people when these people do see sports that they haven’t heard of a lot it peaks there interest and makes them watch it, and the last thing that irrelevant sports do for the olympics is when sports from different countries that are really only played in one country come to the olympics, it means that a alot of people want to watch it because they rarly see it.
What do the public think of the Olympics irrelevant sports?
Last week I interviewed Stephen Graham , my PE teacher. I desided to interview him because he almost went to the olympics in hokey. I think that he had some really good points about the questions I asked him. Even though I asked him 7 questions, I’m going to highlight the best 3 that relate to my topic the most.
What do you think about the number of sports in the Olympics:
Mr Graham says that it is very good as spectator, because there is a large variety of sports you can watch, but if you were the hosting the olympics as a nation it would be very challenging, because you need the millions of dollars to pay for the stadiums and living for the athletes. Mr graham also thought that its really good for minor sports to get ther chance to be in the spotlight for once.
If you could choose, what sports would you take out of the Olympics:
Mr Graham thinks that the olympics should be more of an individual sport event, so what take out all team sports. This will also lower the cost of the Olympics so more countries could host, because there would be less participants lowering the cost of food they need to buy and lowering the amount of people they need to accommodate.
What is an irrelevant sport for you: For Mr Graham he does really see synchronised swimming as a sport that should be in the Olympics but that's just his personal opinion. Another sport he doesn't like is football and the Olympics because it's not the best place in the world going head to head instead it's the downgraded under 23s with two super players.
What do the IOC need to do now?
I think what the IOC needs to do now it, is analyze what sports they need to get rid of. Think about what I have said, and what my expert has said, consult the public on what they think and if necessary rewrite a few lines on the olympic charter.
Conclution
In conclusion, the IOC has added too many irrelevant sports to the olympics. The occasional irrelevant sport is alright but there are too many of them, I also think that what Mr Graham said is right and that the olympics should be a one person sporting event and all team sports should be canned, I think that I have put the most effort into this inquiry them any other this year, and I really enjoyed it, thanks for reading.
