INTRODUCTION
KIA Ora boys today i'm talking to you about what it's like to be a dairy farmer.
Farmers work all year round but there's a special time of year where the cows dry off and that's around april that's when the farmers stop milking the cows. Then they have their babies in spring, that's when you get busy again. Being a farmer there's lots of responsibilities such as you have to wake up early in the mornings, you have to work hard.
QUALIFICATION / OTHER BENEFITS
Being a farmer you don’t have to have any qualifications. On the farm you have to pay attention to detail because if you don't watch out on how much grass you've got,And you don't watch what health your cows are in.They might die and get hungry. If your grass isn't long enough to feed the cows they won't produce any milk so you’ll lose money, you gotta be a businessman you gotta understand money, interest rates, finances.
You also gotta be a machanic because if your bike breaks down you gotta know how to fix it.In New Zealand we have two types of cows we have the jerseys there the brown ones and we have fregin cows there the black and white cows. So when you're a farmer you only milk twice a day, once at 4.30 in the morning then again at 4.30 in the afternoon.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Here is why farmers milk twice a day.
So they have 12 hours to get enough milk for the next shift.Because if you milk at 5.30 in the morning then milk them again at 3.30. There not gonna have enough milk. The reason most farmers be farmers is because they get a house & 50-55k a year and if there kid has a footy game during the day they can go to it.The amount of milk you get from a cow a day is 25 liters,And that's about 6000 liters per cow a year.
Farmers often get bored doing the same job everyday but that's the lifestyle of a farmer.Get up,get the cows, feed them, milk them, then drop them off and that's repeated everyday and in the afternoon. There are lots of things to prepare for when being a farmer. You might be milking the cows then next minute there's a cow having a seizure and you have to be prepared to try and save that cow's life. That's why it is critical to know about cows and know what to do when it happens.
WHAT DELIBERATE ACTS IN YR 10 WILL I NEED TO BE A FARMER.
What deliberate acts I need to do in Y10 to become a good farmer.I need to start studying cows,I need to start learning how to repair a fence,I need to know how to pull a calf out of the cow.I also need to know how to fix a motorbike.
To become a farmer you need to be a sharp thinker E.g you know where every paddock is around the farm. Also you need to know how to do a couple of extra stuff like learn how to do fencing. Because if one of the fences are broken your cows are gonna be everywhere. Here are some examples of what extra jobs you need to know to be a farmer.
WHAT DELIBERATE ACTS DO I NEED TO DO IN YR 13
What deliberate acts I need to do in senior school.I should have Ncea level 1-3,I should have a part time job at the time.I should know how to ride & fix a motor bike. I should know how to put the milk machine onto their nipples .In yr 13 i should have my drivers license and a car maybe. Or I should also be looking forward to going to uni if i want to go. Being a farmer is a handful of work,Some weeks you work 80 hours some you only work for 40 hours a week.
GREAT THINGS ABOUT THE JOB
First thing that is great about the job is that you get a house you wont need to pay for the water and the power bills. You get your own motor bike for the job but you don't keep it.You also get milk for free. You get gas for free and sometimes you can even fill your car up if you have a good relationship with your boss. You get some free meat sometimes, depending on when your cows have left for the butcher.
CONCLUSION
Lastly.People have a better rate at working on a farm than working anywhere else.E.g what other jobs give you a house with rent & power free. What else jobs give you the privilege to go home after your first herd of cows. And stay home until the afternoon is ready to be milked.Your boss relies on you a lot most days at work you would milk between 500-800 cows and that's between two people with a rotary milking shed. If we didn’t have farmers what would you eat ?.
