Fish Report
Thesis: Change the fishing law to 3 snappers per person per day, and put a law in for a maximum fish size because they are very good at breeding fish
Intro
Big commercial fishing is a big problem because it is unsustainable.
Overfishing can be sustainable, but only if everyone sticks to the laws and rules put in place to protect the environment. Ways we overfish can be bycatch of fish that caught 2(that were not being targeted), Protected species bycatch, The trawl footprint
1st paragraph.
The biggest contributors to overfishing in NZ are commercial fishing and trawling from big seafood companies. There are 1500 registered fishing vessels in New Zealand and over 13000 full-time fishermen- workers. For us, we can only catch up to 20 fish per person, per day. Big commercial fishing ships can catch up to 50 per person daily. Which ends up being between around 91-93 million tonnes in one year globally. So to help with the fish population, we should be only able to catch up to 15 fish per person per day. And big commercial fishing ships should be able to catch up to 40 fish per day per person to help the fish repopulate.
During the 3 months when NZ locked down the country, the fish came closer to the beaches, wharves, and rocks. So when we got out of lock the fish were very close to land and people were catching 45-50 cm snapper from the pilot bay. The reasons being there were no boats in the water to scare the fish away and people were not catching fish. The fish could rest and spawn stress-free. Another reason the fish came closer was that they were no one swimming at poplar swimming spots, mount's main beaches. So when we were in lock the fish came in closer, and they could rest to spawn to produce more fish and help the ecosystem.
2nd paragraph.

3rd paragraph.
Overfishing. You may or may not of being to countdown PAK'nSAVE or new world but the prices of fish are very, very high so when it comes to buying 1 kg of snapper fillies it can cost up to $45 per kg which is about 1 big snapper. You may not know that there is a chain when it comes to selling fish, but you think the fish goes straight to the buyer like a countdown. No, it goes from boats to processors where they file the fish, clean them, check for bugs, etc. Through the time of going through all the different stages, the prices go up and up, so when you go to buy fish you will be spending x2 to x3 times as much as the shop buys it for
4th paragraph.
Different sized countries consume different amounts of fish, such as China with 2,035.262 fish eaten and Myanmar with 1,501.415 fish eaten and Vietnam with 1,148,447 fish eaten and Japan with 730,783 fish eaten. So those are some of the biggest countries that consume fish.
5th paragraph.
What can governments do to help fish? The government should inform more breeding grounds that fishermen can not touch so fish can go there and spawn and boats can not drive through and it's a reserve for fish so they can go there and be protected. They have put a marine reserve. outside kiatuna cut to stop overfishing and trawling if they put laws
6th paragraph.
What is a marine reserve? Marine reserves are all over the county from lakes to oceans and the idea is to let fish go there and you cannot fish there. If the government put more fishing reserves throughout New Zealand the fish will come back in very large numbers and live there and breed and breed and breed until there is a whole ecosystem for fish to live in
7th paragraph.
Fishing is a very important part of the world's culture and will always be that way. But the way the world is going soon there will not be enough fish to sustain people and then we will run out there are currently 3,500,000,000,000 fish in the ocean and humans have caught well over 2.7 trillion each year fish so we have caught half of our fish population. Soon we will run out of fish soon so we need to be strict about what we do.1
8th paragraph.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is launching a scheme to put cameras onto commercial fishing boats to support the reputation of New Zealand’s fishing industry and monitor the sustainability of our industry. Between 2022 and 2024, up to 300 commercial fishing vessels will have onboard cameras installed. The Government will spend $68 million on the programme.
Conclusion
There are many solutions on how to stop overfishing and how to reduce the amount of fish that is caught but we can't stop commercial fishing, But we can help but put back big breading fish like snapper over 70 cm and big gurnard, kingfish, kahawai, cod and trevally these are all the fish we catch in the bay of plenty so when it comes to fishing that's what we could do. Also making more marine reserves and lowering the limits on snapper from 7 per person to 3 per person. And putting marine reverses on the most used spots let fish rest and return. So that's what we could do to help our KIA mouna.
