“Time spent reading books is the best predictor of a child’s growth as a reader.
Students who read more, read better.”
~ Anderson, R. et al. Reading Research Quarterly. 1988.
DAILY 5
Just like in our classrooms, kids at home can use the Daily 5 as a literacy framework to engage in reading and writing activities. Daily 5 is a literacy framework that instills behaviors of independence, creates a community of highly engaged readers, writers, and learners.

Read-to-Self
Times spent reading a good book is the BEST thing our fifth graders can do during their time off. If you need access to books, please contact one of the 5th grade teachers and we will help get books to your child. Students also have access to Sora for reading.
Read-to-Someone
Reading aloud is important for fluency. Feel free to have your 5th grader read to their younger siblings or aloud to anyone/thing who will listen!
Listen to Reading
Sora is also a great resource for Listen to Reading. Check out your Clever app to access audio books on Sora.
Word Work
Word Games
Playing word games is a terrific way to practice word analysis skills. Here are some of our favorites you may have at home:
Scrabble, Bananagrams, UpWords, Apples to Apples Jr., Rhyme Out, Boggle, Word Searches, Words with Friends.
Technology Tools
See Google Classroom and Clever for teacher-suggested apps and websites for Word Work options.
Work on Writing
Beyond the writing that we assign in class, we encourage students to write for fun through choice writing. Here are some ideas to inspire your writers:
Write letters to elderly family members that you can't visit right now
Start a poetry journal
Start a kid-friendly cookbook
Write a children's book for a younger sibling/neighbor/cousin
Write with friends, add some classmates on a Google Doc or Slide and collaborate on a story
Write a joke book to share with your family, friends, etc.
Keep a daily journal. You are living in an unprecedented historical moment right now. You may want to share this journal with your grand-kids one day!
Teach yourself how to use StoryBird and create a story.
