Jean Williams currently teaches all four levels of engineering classes at Hammond High Magnet School. This is her 13th year teaching and her 4th year at HHMS. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mrs. Williams was employed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for 12 years, where she specialized in working with military service members and their families and adolescents within a variety of settings.
Mrs. Williams became a FIRST Robotics coach in 2014 when her oldest daughter asked her to coach her FIRST LEGO League robotics team, the Bayou Builders. While her daughter, an HHMS alum, has since gone on to attend college pursuing a major in physics, Mrs. Williams remains one of the lead coaches for the Bayou Builders. She became involved with HHMS in the fall of 2016, when she was asked to become a mentor and eventually lead coach for HHMS' FIRST Robotics Competition team, Torbotics #2080. She was named an FRC Woodie Flowers Award Finalist in 2021 for the Southeast Region recognizing her dedication to building the STEM opportunities available to students in our region and admiration from youth on her teams.
Over the past nine robotics seasons, Mrs. Williams has had the privilege of supporting the endeavors of multiple teams, three of which have advanced to a total of 13 international competitions and seven FIRST World Championships. This is a tremendous accomplishment and is a testament to just how talented and dedicated the youth are in our area. There is no limit when students are able to come together to develop what inspires them while also giving back to their community.
Mrs. Williams started her teaching career as a traditional Montessori teacher and has since taught multiple classes in robotics, physical science, and now engineering. She has taken advanced classes in physics and engineering and has been working to get all of our engineering classes at HHMS LSU STEM Pathways Certified. She is also presently an instructor for the STEM Pathways Pre-Engineering Department at LSU. Mrs. Williams enjoys getting to coach FIRST robotics teams alongside her husband of 22 years, "Mr. Ben," an air traffic controller at MSY in New Orleans. They are the proud parents of Lauren Williams, a 2020 HHMS alumni, and Jillian Williams, a 9th grade IB PDP student at Hammond High Magnet School.
