Engineering and robotics have been a part of the HHMSexperience since the fall of 2006. Due in part to the initial success of our FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, Torbotics #2080, and the forethought of its founder and first Mentor, then Physics teacher, Shelly Gaydos, our program has since grown from an after school opportunity into a nationally recognized 4-year engineering program with Louisiana STEM Pathways endorsement. Engineering is currently one of the more popular areas of study in college and trade schools. In addition to being a high demand job field and source of financial growth, many professionals would tell you their decision to pursue engineering stemmed from being able to creatively use science and math to produce solutions to challenging world problems and develop products to make life easier. With all of our classes certified through LSU STEM Pathways, our students have the opportunity to learn about a variety of different engineering fields; engaging in project-based learning modules, while also meeting local professionals in those selected fields. As our courses progress, students have the opportunity to work on increasingly more complex problems and systems in an effort to better integrate what they are learning. 93% of those who actively participate in our full program go on to major in STEM-related fields post graduation at accredited universities and trade schools on scholarship. They leave our program with highly marketable, sought after skills, along with the opportunity to earn an advanced certification in Autodesk Inventor and up to five different micro-credentials in robotics which can be directly applied to the work force.
