Research Philosophy

Dr. Zhang is an advocate for the research to practice (r2p). The true value of academic inquiry is realized when it is applied in the field. He holds a firm belief that centering practitioners and involving them at every stage of research is essential for successful r2p outcomes.

With this in mind, Dr. Zhang is dedicated to growing his research program by working shoulder-to-shoulder with his industry partners in a participatory fashion.

Why a participatory approach?

Study design

While working construction is dangerous, most debilitating injuries would not have occurred had there been more practical research starting with what practitioners actually need.

Research translation

Research results that are not appropriately communicated to practitioners has no impact outside of the ivory tower.

Research implementation

Research-informed solutions have little value if they cannot be applied faithfully and effectively in practice.

Areas of research interest

Producing, translating, and implementing safety knowledge via scientific methods (e.g., participatory ergonomics, user-centered design, and implementation science) and by applying theoretical insights from various domains (e.g., health behavior science and behavioral economics)
Enhancing safety training and education using emerging technologies (e.g., biosensors, VR, and AR) and pedagogical approaches (e.g., gamification and storytelling)
Improving site-specific safety planning by integrating advanced design and management approaches (e.g., prevention through design, lean construction, and building information management)
