I'm James Tooley a Freshman Engineer at Texas A&M University. I'm currently a member of the TAMUG Robotics Team and competing in the ABS S.M.A.R.T. robotics competition and hope to transfer to College Station for a bachelors in Electrical Engineering.
Through the course, I think my understanding of rhetoric and composition has significantly changed. At the very outset, I had considered writing mainly as a medium for effective communication and meeting requirements within academia. However, with time, I have learned to recognize writing as a complex process in making meaning, engaging one's audience, and shaping the thoughts of others through deliberate rhetorical decisions. This has been quite revolutionary to me, especially when working on the multimodal projects and honing my analytical abilities. I now see composition as more than just structuring words on a page, it's about combining modes, ideas and tools to create compelling and dynamic narratives.
My perception of writing in college and within my discipline has also matured. Early on I viewed college writing as rigidly formulaic, focused on essays and strict rubrics. This course challenged me to move beyond that perspective, teaching me how to integrate creativity, critical thinking, and technical proficiency. For example, investigating such notions as digital and technological literacy allowed me to understand how writing relates to greater social conversations and professional skills, such as storytelling and audience engagement. This has deepened my appreciation for how writing shapes not just academic success but also career readiness and global citizenship.
The challenges I’ve faced, such as improving rhetorical analysis and managing the technical complexities of multimodal projects, have pushed me to grow in meaningful ways. I’m most proud of how I’ve developed my ability to synthesize diverse ideas into cohesive arguments, particularly in my research paper and multimodal artifact. These assignments required balancing clarity, creativity, and technical accuracy, and completing them has given me confidence in my ability to tackle complex projects. At the same time, I recognize areas for further improvement, such as developing stronger transitions between ideas and exploring deeper layers of analysis. Moving forward, I've set a goal to consistently seek feedback and engage in iterative revisions to refine my work.
Advice to Self:
In any future project, always take up a challenge to be accommodating and adaptive. It means that whether you write your research paper or create any digital artifact, flexibility and creative imagination will surely help you craft pieces that are more compelling and impactful.
Continue making bridges of academic writing to professional usage. For instance, try taking rhetorical strategies into presentations, proposals, or other workplace communications.
This class has shown me that writing is not something restricted to the classroom but rather a lifelong tool that keeps me learning and professionally developing. Applying these lessons, I seek to meet each new challenge with confidence and strategies learned here.
