Reflection
Looking back on 1984 by George Orwell, I have considered the novel's themes in terms of totalitarian control and its relevance to the modern discourse. The way Orwell has portrayed a society under authoritarian rule underlines the psychological and social outcomes of government overreach in suppressing individuality and freedom. This was evident through the experiences of Winston and Julia, whose rebellion against the Party underlined the extreme extent to which oppressive regimes suppress dissent. Our discussions emphasized how Orwell's warnings remain relevant, especially in today's context of surveillance, data regulation, and debates about personal freedom.
I sought to examine the inner conflict of Winston with Big Brother's ideology, specifically his claim that the Party had eliminated impulses and emotions. Whereas Winston seemed to conclude this was due to persuasion, I contended this was an unsupported conclusion because the text offered little evidence of overt propaganda. I also compared Winston's budding self-awareness via his relationship with Julia to people who act out in defiance of oppressive conditions.
In group discussions we developed thoughts on Newspeak as a tool to reduce thought and even related it to other historical events, such as China's Cultural Revolution. We even talked about the symbolic smashing of the glass coral piece when Winston and Julia were taken into custody and how it related to the fragility of their rebellion. Further development included an analysis of Winston's psychological change at the hands of O'Brien, wondering if such a forcible re-education could indeed change one's beliefs.
This reflection brought out the continued relevance of 1984 but also its limitations in providing new insights into familiar themes such as surveillance. While the text reinforced the dangers of control, it also served to remind one of the ongoing challenges societies face in resisting conformity and safeguarding freedom.
