Understanding Misgendering
This project is a series of studies examining experiences and cognitions related to misgendering. There are several studies under this project. Some studies explore the experiences of transgender and nonbinary individuals who experience frequent misgendering, specifically looking at the sources and types of misgendering. Other projects aim to experimentally investigate the cognitive mechanisms behind accidental misgendering. These studies are developed, conducted, and analyzed in collaboration with PhD students within the lab.
Young Children's Future Observation Study (Collaborative; Early Childhood)

Learning to Care within the Family (Qualitative; Cross-Cultural)
This project is an investigation into how American, Brazilian, Finnish, and Taiwanese families conceptualize care within the family. Study questions include, how do parents socialize children to learn to care for family members within the family?
Young Children’s Chore Observation Study (Collaborative; Early Childhood)
In collaboration with Dr. Nadia Chernyak’s lab at UC Irvine (https://www.dosclab.com/), we are investigating how children in the US from ages 3- to 9-years-old are perceiving their family’s division of chores.
Youth’s Future Expectations (Cross-Cultural)
In collaboration with scholars in São Paulo, Brazil (Drs. Luciana Maria Caetano and Betânia Alves Veiga Dell’ Agli, Universidade de São Paulo), and Seoul, South Korea (Dr. Young Hwa Kim, Seoul National University of Education), the MD lab is investigating young adults’ expectations for their future (e.g., childcare, career, and marriage plans), their social attitudes, and their reasons for their expectations.
Children's Understandings of Need and Who Should Care (Collaborative; Cross-Cultural)
In collaboration with Dr. Jeffrey Liew and Dr. Jinsil Seo at Texas A&M, and Dr. Juliene Madureira Ferreira at Tampere University in Finland, the MD lab will investigate how children come to recognize the need for care in the family context and develop ideas of who should care within the family.
