Project Braveheart started with the drive and goal to create a space for all drag and bring the art to conventions across Texas! Within the first year the show has gone to be featured nightlife entertainment at conventions across Texas and has welcomed over 30 different entertainers on stage! Through it all Project Braveheart has goals to travel the country in years to come and welcome even more talent to the stage!
Project Braveheart was started by MyaTheBrave in 2024, with their first show being at Delta H Con. Mya used to perform with a drag troupe which went under the name Electracora. However, when it came to creating her first show, she wanted to do something different by incorporating cosplayers into drag performances. It was at this first show where sanguiine.cos (Erik) and cherrycherry.cos (Vic) joined the troupe. XO (Alex) would join later after performing in an audience participation event at one of Project Braveheart's shows.
"The first show I did for Project Braveheart, Houston had just gotten hit by a hurricane." Mya explains. She also explains that because of Hurricane Beryl, many of the performers couldn't show up to the show. "I reached out to Cherry Cherry (Vic) and Baby (Erik) and they were like 'we'd love to'. ...I was nervous because it was like, if this show doesn't go like half decent, like this is probably not going to be a thing I do" Mya said. Though, despite the setbacks, Mya, Erik, and Vic were all greatful for the opportunity they were given to perform.
Erik explains that cosplay and drag for them have always had a "...mix of both at the same time. ...you're dressing up [and] are performing in a way, whether it is you are actually like performing or you're just walking around as the character taking pictures." As Erik continued to cosplay, he realized that his cosplay's were very close in style to his drag, causing him to combine the two. Mya, on the other hand, started with drag and then was invited to an anime convention. It was there when they realized the two could be combined as well. XO explains that they believe that once they got into doing performances in cosplay contests, they realized that this was just them doing a form of drag in a different way. Erik further states that many of the techniques that are used by drag queens and kings are also used by cosplayers.
Similar to the cosplay community, Erik explains that drag performers have some of the same aspects when it comes to their community. "I would say both communities [have]...tended to not be treated well throughout life, and still now it tends to be something you're a bit ostricized about." Erik further explains how the 'found family' aspect plays into both the cosplay and drag community. Similar to how drag queens have houses with drag mothers and daughters, Erik states that cosplayers have the same thing when people say they have a cosplay mom or dad. "...that's like a family I have...and for some people that bond is stronger than blood and that's their family. And I think its beautiful in the end, like the big thing that the Venn diagram of both of them to me in the middle is this love and friendship and kindness towards each other that they share." Erik says.
Though there aren't many differences between cosplay and drag, Vic does explain that for drag compared to cosplay that they usually make their wigs bigger, and have taken tips from other drag queens to use in their cosplay. Mya further explains that she will make 'drag mixes' for certain characters that she feels would fit the bill for being in a more drag-like style, usually for more femme presenting characters. Erik goes on to state that more craftsmanship aspects will go into their cosplays compared to their drag persona outfits, but the same amount of work applies to both. Finally, XO states that for them it depends on the performance. "...if I'm planning to perform this at a cosplay contest, it's going to be different from if I'm planning to perform this at a drag show, or specifically even a burlesque show." XO says this is due to the differences of the audiences and what they are expecting from a performer and how the performer interacts with the audience.
As previously explained, many drag techniques are used sometimes when it comes to cosplay, but as Erik explains, it can be fun to perform at share that style with others. Mya says "...drag has really helped me find a community and really find friends within the cosplay scene." She also states that doing cosplay has made her drag style different from other drag queens by her wanting to dress up as video game or anime characters. "...in both communities, the drag community and the cosplay community, they've both helped me really find a sense of friendship and grow connections with people" Mya says. XO goes on to say that by doing both drag and cosplay, that it has helped them improve their confidence and help them find a community where they feel comfortable asking questions to other people.
