Kristen started her costuming journey with a high interest in historical fashion with her first medieval dress when she was 12. Though she had been around the cosplaying world for years, after 9 years of on again and off again progress, she finished her first cosplay. With a wide range of skills, Kristen believes no one ever stops learning, and is eager to help any cosplay with ideas, learn new skills, or give advice.
Sara first considered getting into costuming when she was 13, deep in a mandalorian obsession. She didn’t actually start anything until she was 18, beginning her journey toward being an official member of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club. Six years later she still hasn’t finished her first kit, but she hopes to have it approved before the end of the year. If she doesn’t decide to repaint the whole thing for the eighteenth time.
The Mando Mercs are an international Star Wars dress-up group that specializes in making suits inspired by The Mandalorian. Because they are officially licensed through Lucasfilms, the suits that they wear have to go through an approval process, Sara states. "We're just a group of people who really like mandalorians." says Sara. There are other Star Wars related dress-up clubs such as this one, like the Sabre Guild that focuses specifically on making lightsabers. It is also very easy to join, Kristen expresses. "...you just plug in and get involved" she says.
"A common misconception is that we make the armor out of foam." Sara says. She goes on to say that because their armor gets approved by Lucasfilms, they have to make their armor out of a more durable material called centra, a stylized plastic, or some people choose to 3D print their armor as well. Though, others who cannot get access to these materials may use common household materials to make their armor. "My gauntlets are PVC pipes and my plates are made out of centra." Sara expresses. Kristen, who comes from a sewing background, says to "[Try] and be as frugal and resourceful as possible. Otherwise, it gets expensive."
The club is split up into geographical regions, and there are local clans all across the world, Sara states. Once a person gets involved in their local clan, then they can go to group meetups or other events that the clan may hold. "We get together and have armor parties [that] help [everyone] work on their costumes." Sara says. "For somebody that has no idea how to do any of [this], the armor parties and other people who love doing it just show up because they want to help." The group is also a non-profit organization, and will also go to children's hospitals and events to give back to the community at large.
