A Teacher's Guide
One of the greatest things about Google Classroom is you can monitor the students' work during the whole process. Any Google Document, Sheet or Slides Presentation that is attached to the Google Classroom assignment is visible when you access a Google Classroom Assignment. As the assignment is attached, it becomes shared with you so you can check and see what’s happening in real time.
Note: Another benefit to this is that student presentations are also attached to, so there is no need to sign out and sign students in in order to show a presentation on a projector or smart board. All of the presentations are in one place.
To see student work, click on the assignment title and then click on "View Assignment".
The page you will see will have all of your students listed and links to any documents or files they have connected to that assignment.
Note: If you added a document to the assignment and created a copy for each student, but there are some students who don't have documents attached to their name, that simply means they haven't opened the assignment yet. The documents are created on their end when they go to the assignment which allows them to be owned by the student.
When you click on any student's assignment, you'll be taken to this screen which includes the student document surrounded by a grading environment. At the top, you can see which student you are grading, and those little arrows to the right allow you to move from one assignment to another without having to go back to Classroom.
On the right side of the grading environment, you can see the other files associated with this assignment if there are more than one. You can also see the student's grade, the rubric if you have one attached, and the private comments. As mentioned earlier, students can always have a private chat with you through Classroom even if you turn off the overall commenting ability.
It’s important to note that when a student clicks the Turn In button either on the document itself or within the application, they can no longer edit that document and you have control. They can still view it, but they cannot edit it. You may want to retain ownership, but you also have the option of returning the document to the student after it has been graded.
When you are ready to return the assignment, you can return it straight from this view, or you can go back to the Classroom assignment, click on the students whose documents you want to return, and click the Return button at the top of the page. This will trigger an email with their grade being sent to them and a ownership of their assignment will be returned to them.
When looking at the Students tab, if you click on a student's name, you are taken to an at-a-glance page that lists all of that student's assignments, the due dates, and the assignment status. If you click on an assignment name, this page will provide links to the documents and attachments associated with that assignment.
This is a great way to see where a student may be struggling, and a screen shot can be sent to parents as a quick communication starter.
