AVID Is…
An elective course with its own curriculum
A place to learn WICOR strategies (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organizational, and reading skills) that are transferable to all subject areas
A place to create a four-year plan with your AVID counselor to ensure you meet high school graduation and college entrance requirements
A place for students who want to challenge themselves with honors/AP work and would like some support
A place to develop strong relationships with one teacher and a core group of classmates for four years
An opportunity for peer and adult tutoring
A place where students can get support with the college application and financial aid processes
A place for the AVID teacher, counselor, students, families, and tutors to work as a team to support each AVID student
An opportunity for enrichment activities like college visits, team building field trips, and motivational speakers
Typically, an AVID student:
Demonstrates motivation in academics and personal growth
Is willing to seek out and accept help
Exhibits a positive attitude
Actively participates in class and enjoys working with others
Is able to complete four-year university entrance requirements prior to graduation
Has a GPA of 2.0 to 3.5
Has potential and motivation, but may need support to overcome obstacles to achievement
Meets standards on state tests
AVID students share the common goal of developing the skills necessary to fulfill their post-secondary college and career aspirations.
AVID teachers are committed to boosting student confidence and skills. The strategies implemented in the classroom are research-based and are demonstrated to have measurable effects on student writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading.
