The Gift
Learning is a gift to nurture and share. The name Akomanga Kaihanga was gifted to Tāmaki College by an ex-student and past School Board member of Māori descent. It describes the concept of ‘project-based learning'.
Tāmaki College has partnered with the University of Auckland's Liggins Institute since 2006. The school influenced the development of the Institute’s Science and Society stream through work with LENScience and was a key partner in developing the Pacific Science for Health Literacy Project (PSHLP).
After the closure of LENScience's onsite classroom in 2016, Tāmaki College, like many schools, continued using the LENScience school-based learning modules built around students exploring locally relevant issues by looking at scientific evidence alongside community perspectives. Building on the LENScience Context Embedded Learning model and 'Students as Researchers' programme, which Tāmaki helped develop, the school created alternative opportunities to engage students in action-oriented learning, examining issues relevant to the Glenn Innes community, now reflected in Akomanga Kaihanga.
Akomanga Kaihanga is supported financially by a combination of business-as-usual resourcing within the Tāmaki College operating budget and generous donations from the Rise Trust (2023 - 2024) and the Education Partnerships and Innovation Trust (2025 - 2026)
Tāmaki Connect Trust
Developed by Tāmaki Connect Trust in association with Tāmaki College, Project RISE is a community development programme that helps Tāmaki College connect with the local community to create value for the Tāmaki community.
