Special Weeks
MATHS WEEK
Maths Week takes place every October and runs over a two week period. Here in St Fintan’s our pupils fully participate in a variety of fun-filled and engaging activities such as maths trails, maths quizzes, interactive games and live tv challenges to name but a few. Maths week is always hugely successful and very popular with all. Participation in Maths Week not only makes maths fun but encourages teamwork, critical thinking and most important of all helps our pupils develop a positive attitude towards maths.
Science Week
As part of our promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in St Fintan’s,Science Week is held annually in October/November. It is another week in the calendar that teachers and students enjoy immensely. During Science Week, children get a chance to both observe and participate in experiments and enjoy the wonders of the scientific world in their classrooms.
During Science Week 2023 each class created some impressive feats of engineering from castles, to musical instruments, to rockets, all of which were on display in the GP room for parents to see and enjoy. Children got to enjoy a Science fair on the last day of the week with 5th and 6th class children demonstrating a number of mind blowing experiments.
Photos and videos of all the activities were recorded and put forward for a Science Foundation Ireland School Award. Fingers crossed we will be successful in our application!
ACTIVE WEEK
This is always an exciting week in the school calendar and a favourite with students, staff and their families. We usually run this week in May/June when the days are brighter and warmer and ideal for outdoor activities. Children take part in a range of sporting and active activities on a daily basis throughout the week as well as also having an active element to their homework. Active Week is wrapped up with our annual Fun Day on the Friday, which is organised and run by 6th Class.
SEachtain na gaeilge
In the run up to St Patrick’s Day, bíonn Gaeilge le cloisteáil ar fud na scolie, with the running of Seachtain na Gaeilge. During Seachtain na Gaeilge there is an increased emphasis on Gaeilge throughout the school. We have a Phrase of the Day (Frása an lae) and the use of Gaeilge is promoted throughout the school with posters, art displays and the daily awarding of certificates for Gaeilgeoir an Lae.
The Student Council also run initiatives during Seachtain na Gaeilge and in 2024 it was to design a poster using your favourite Irish word/phrase.
On the last day of the week we always have “ Lá Glas”, where everyone dresses in their brightest and best greens. All classes put on a wonderful show of amhráin, dánta, ceol agus damhsa (songs, poems, music and dancing) and the week culminates in a Céilí in the school yard. Í gcónaí bainimid sult as na gníomhaíochtaí!
