D.E.A.R. Time
All classes engage in D.E.A.R time, “Drop Everything And Read,” where all children and adults get to read material of their own choosing in a quiet and reader friendly environment daily. It enables children to experience reading as a fun and pleasurable experience.
Class Libraries
Each class has its own “leabharlann” with a wide range of books to suit all tastes. There is a great mix of fiction and non-fiction books from popular authors. Each library is diverse and inclusive and provides a wide variety of classic and new titles. The County Wexford Mobile library visits the school fortnightly and all children experience a visit to the local library at least once during their time in the infant classes.
Literacy Lift Off
Literacy Lift Off is an evidence based intervention that gives children great opportunity to read books at their own level of competency, while gradually progressing the complexity of the material. The PM+ levelled reading scheme and Red Squirrel Decodable readers are used for this initiative. We have recently added many new titles to our levels.
Literacy Lift-of is a fantastic initiative which lends itself to improved literacy skills, thus helping children achieve their full potential as readers.
SEN teachers in collaboration with class teachers work with the children in Junior and Senior Infants throughout the year on a range of literacy activities. These activities comprise, new reading, familiar reading, phonics/word work, writing, letter work and tricky word work.
Readathon
During March 2024 in recognition of “March the Month of Reading,” the school took part in World Book Day, where children dressed up as characters from their favourite books. This kicked off our hugely successful school initiative and fundraiser -”The Readathon“- to promote and in-still a love of reading among our students. The children sought sponsorship to read as many books / pages as possible over two weeks. We are astounded by the number of book worms we have in the school!. A staggering sum in excess of €1700 was raised for much needed resources in the school. Children did fantastically well and were rewarded with some homework passes to enjoy a little rest after all of their reading. Hopefully, this will be an initiative that will become a regular event in our school calendar.
