Writing

READ CAREFULLY

LAST WEEK we had a lesson on combining 2 independent or simple sentences with conjunctions and a comma to make a compound sentence. Example: Mary usually goes to church on Sundays, but she didn't go last Sunday.

WE CAN ALSO take out the subject in the second sentence if it is the same as the subject in the first sentence and combine the 2 sentences with a conjunction. WE DO NOT USE A COMMA IN THESE SENTENCES.

Using the Example sentence above. Mary usually goes to church on Sundays, but she didn't go last Sunday. Mary is the subject in sentence 1, and she is the subject in sentence 2. They are the same, so we take out the 'she' in the second sentence and put the 'but' conjunction to join. Example: Mary usually goes to church on Sundays but didn't go last Sunday. NO COMMA USED!

**If the subjects in the 2 sentences are NOT the same, you CAN'T do this! EXAMPLE (with sentence from last week):

The girls are building a snowwoman. The boys are throwing snowballs at them. The subject in sentence 1 = girls The subject in sHentence 2 = boys. NOT THE SAME. The girls are building a snowwoman, and the boys are throwing snowballs at them.

HOMEWORK- do these sentences and e-mail me your answers. The first one is done for you.

Let's practice by using the same sentences from last week.

**REMEMBER: the first letter of the second sentence must be small, not capitalized. Make one sentence with no comma and the conjunction in parenthesis.

1) My sister will go to college. She will study nursing. (and)

Answer** My sister will go to college and study nursing.

2) It rained all day. It didn't stop. (and)

3) She likes Seattle. She doesn't like all the rain. (but)

4) We would like to go to your party. We have another party to go to. (but)

5) Do you want coffee? Do you want tea? (or)

6) They may plant roses. They'll grow vegetables. (or)

Do the same for these sentences. Use the correct conjunction ( and, or, but, so ) to join the sentences.

7) She isn't married. She has a serious boyfriend.

8) The papers fell on the floor. They laid there for one hour.

9) My brother wants to be a nurse. He wants to be a doctor. (** if the words in sentence 1 and 2 are the same, you can take out those repeated words in sentence 2 and combine the sentences with the conjunction.

10) I feel sick this morning. I will not go to work today.

11) My bike is old. It is still good.

12) My supervisor may give the job to Larry. He may give the job to Mandy.
