Students have the opportunity to participate in year-round LDE events as well as CDE events in the winter. To learn more about a contest, check out the information below.
The Opening and Closing Ceremony LDE is designed to develop agricultural leadership by providing for FFA members participation in public speaking activities and stimulating interest in leadership and citizenship. Students join a mock officer team and memorize/recite their part of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
“I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds…” Ninth graders present the National FFA Creed from memory and answer three questions related to it. The FFA Creed outlines the organization’s values and beliefs regarding the industry of agriculture, FFA membership, and citizenship and patriotism. Students participating in the Creed Speaking LDE learn to communicate in a powerful, organized and professional manner and build self-confidence.
Much like the traditional creed, members recite the FFA Creed and answer three questions from the judges, all in Spanish. There are two divisions based on grades.
Students will practice their ability to think on their feet as they select and complete a short improv speech on a random agriculture-related topic that they draw. In round two, students draw a quote or keyword that applies to them and recite another speech.
This contest is only open to sophomores.
From a list of potential agriculture jobs, students submit a cover letter and resume to a potential employer. Then they participate in a preliminary face–to–face interview.
This event is designed for grades sophomore and up.
During the Prepared Public Speaking Leadership Development Event (LDE), students write and deliver a six to eight-minute speech about a current agriculture-related topic.
Students research a topic of interest and then put together a creative, informative speech. The speech is then presented to a panel of judges, who score the student based on the speech’s content, composition and delivery.
This event is designed for grades sophomore and up.
Students participating in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking Leadership Development Event showcase their agricultural knowledge and ability to think on their feet by giving a speech and answering questions with limited prep time.
During this event, participants draw from 18 agricultural topics and then select three of interest. From those three, a student selects the topic of their speech and has 30 minutes to prepare using five resources. Participants then present a four to six-minute speech on their topic to a panel of judges. After their speech, students answer five minutes worth of questions on the topic they just presented.
This event is designed for grades sophomore and up.
In the vine pruning contest, students learn to prune various styles of wine grape growing systems during their dormant season. Students are scored based on their accuracy and neatness of pruning as well as their demonstration while pruning.
