Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli is a quirky novel about a quirky girl. Stargirl moves to a school where everybody is the same: same style, same interests, same conformity. Stargirl, however, could not be more different. She is kindness, vibrancy, and sunshine, and an enigma that this little town will remember forever.
This book asks our students to think about what makes them unique and how they embrace that uniqueness or hide it to fit in. Would they accept someone who is different from them? What if they disrupted their uniform society?
Our book club for grades 7-8 focuses on social emotional learning, selecting texts that help our students navigate through difficult subjects they may face while at this life stage such as bullying, body positivity, faith, mental health, friendship, confidence, and self-identity.
Book club meets every Thursday in the library during 5th period lunch.
We begin each session with a check-in question to share a bit about ourselves and how we are doing that day. Every meeting Miss Kulak, or a student volunteer, reads aloud from our book. We follow that with discussion questions, journal time, or an activity related to our reading.
Just show up! Members are always welcome to join us and do not have to commit to attending every meeting.
