This October, our library theme is Th Nightmare Before Christmas: Nightmare in the Library
We celebrate spooky season with creepy cool decor and remind ourselves that "life without reading would be a nightmare!"
Each month our library activities revolve around the monthly theme to keep our space fresh and fun!
On October 17th we celebrate Black Poetry Day, dedicated to recognizing the important contributions that Black poets and poems about the Black experience bring to our society and our school. During our monthly focus on this spooky season, our students are introduced to Jean Toomer: a Black poet and biracial rights activist who tapped into his spooky side to write supernatural narrative poems about inequality and racism.
"Reapers" is considered Jean Toomer's creepiest poem, comparing slavery to the figure of a Grim Reaper. This video shows an English class analyzing the literary devices present in this hauntin work.
Our makerspace features "brain break" activities to practice hands-on critical thinking skills, fine motor skills, and creativity. This month, students can honor World Space Week (October 4th - 10th) and celebrate Halloween with a creepy constellation craft!
Each month we feature a book display of titles on our library shelves, and this month we are highlighting our horror collection for some fun Halloween reading!
Pope Leo XIV's prayer suggests that while public meetings between religious leaders are important, collaboration is built in everyday life—through mutual listening, respect, and working together for peace. This intention comes during the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the Second Vatican Council's declaration on the Church's relationship with non-Christian religions, which initiated dialogue and respect among faiths.
Our students are reminded by the Pumpkin King's furry friend Zero that they don't need any zeroes in the gradebook! In October, we like to stay motivated and on task!
