The Subjective Frame is all about the emotional experience of an artwork. It asks you how you feel about an artwork, but it is not just about you. The Subjective Frame includes the:

feelings
emotions
experiences
likes and dislikes
and memories

that are...

expressed by the artist

seen in the artwork

and experienced by the audience

Key Terms

Personal: An idea, belief or experience held by one person. Can be the artist or the audience.

Emotional: A deep felt experience, brought on by forming a connection to the stimulus.

Experience: Something you or the artist has done in the past that can be seen in the work or interactions that you have with an artwork.

Memory: A personal account of an event.

Nostalgia: Looking back on something fondly.

Aesthetic: Having an appearance that is pleasing to the eye. Can relate to personal preference.

Immersive: An artwork that engages the audience by involving them in some way.

Relational: Deliberately forming connections between the artist, artwork and audience.

Here are some questions for the Subjective Frame

What is your first impression?
What do you see, hear…?
How does the work make you feel?
What is the emotional impact of the artwork?
What experiences or memories does it remind you of?
Do you like it?
How successful was it?
What was the artist feeling?
What story or narrative is the artwork telling? What is the meaning?
What does the work tell us about the experience of the artist?
