Mobile Phone and Device Policy
Can I bring my mobile phone to school?
Many new Year Seven students are given a phone for their safety - his parents want to be able to contact him as he is travelling to and from school to be sure that he is safe. This is understandable and the College doesn't ban students from carrying mobile phones, as some schools do.
The rule at Holy Cross however is simple; phones are not to be used throughout the day. They should be NOT SEEN and NOT ON, both during class and in the yard.
Phones being put away in class is important as the constant notifications that many students receive on their phones are an ongoing distraction and a barrier to learning, which is why parents send their sons to school in the first place.
Phones being put away in the yard is important because they are a barrier to developing and maintaining normal social relationships with others.
What if I need to call my parents during the day?
If a student needs to make a call during the day he should seek the permission of his Year Coordinator or go to Student Services in the school office. He will be permitted to use the phone in the office to make urgent calls.
If a student is unwell he should speak with his teacher who will ask another student to accompany him to Student Services. If it is necessary, the office staff will call his parents.
Students should not use their phone to call their parents during the school day. Nor should parents call their son whilst he is at school. Urgent messages will always be passed on to a student by Student Services.
Inappropriate use of mobile phones
Students using their mobile phone inappropriately at school will be asked by their teacher to put the phone away. If a student continues to use their phone inappropriately it may be confiscated. If this happens, the phone will be handed in to the office by the teacher where it will be stored safely. It may be collected at the end of the school day, on condition that the student's Year Coordinator has been able to make contact with the his parents.
Students should never use their mobile phone to take photographs of any other student, member of staff or member of the public without their permission.
Mobile phones as learning tools
At times students may be able to use their phones as tools to support their learning. When this is the case students will be given specific permission by their class teacher.
Mobile phones are valuable devices and each student is responsible for his own device.
The College bears no responsibility for any damages or loss to phones or other valuable devices.
