TITLE: “KNOWLEDGE AND GLOBAL INEQUALITY” Interrogating the Present as History"
DATE: 22nd February 2025
ABSTRACT:
This lecture explored the historical dynamics of the global capitalist economy over the past 200 years, focusing on how monopolization and the exclusion of valuable knowledge have shaped global income trends—initially diverging, but more recently showing signs of convergence. Adopting a Southern perspective, the speaker emphasized the role of knowledge creation and its mastery in understanding and potentially overcoming the middle-income trap. A key theme was the concept of intellectual monopoly capitalism, wherein a small number of powerful entities control intellectual property through patents and copyrights. This concentration restricts access to innovation, hinders competition, and contributes to rising global inequality. By offering a novel framework centered on the creation, control, and exclusion of knowledge, the lecture deepened students’ understanding of the historical roots of global inequality and their relevance to current economic challenges and development economics.
