Welcome! This is my sixth year teaching in the Swedesboro-Woolwich school district. I have previously taught first and second grade in West Deptford. My wife and I live in Pitman with our 4-year old daughter Emerson. We enjoy traveling and staying active in our spare time.
If you have any questions or need to contact me for any reason, please email me at dortega@swsdk6.com or message me through ClassDojo. Thank you for visiting!

I would like to invite any parents, older siblings, grandparents, relatives, or other special people to surprise your child by being a virtual “Mystery Reader”. Students LOVE having their family, friends, and relatives be a part of our educational experience to share in our learning by reading a favorite story aloud to our class.
Mystery readers are special guests who visit our classroom to read a story to the students. Mystery readers can be parents, grandparents, older siblings, or other relatives who would like to share some time with us. We will have a mystery reader about once a month on Fridays. I can try to schedule more dates if there is a strong response.
Please click on the sign up genius link below if you are interested in reading. There are two links so make sure you are signing up according to which homeroom your child is in.
The slots are for 30 minutes each. The reading itself should be about 10-15 minutes in length with some time after for an activity or discussion. You are welcome to bring any age appropriate book to read or I have many options in the classroom if you are in need. Let me know in the sign-up comments what you are thinking.

Communication is so important, especially this year! Along with updating this website often, here are the ways I will be communicating with you this school year:
Class Dojo (pictures and quick reminders). Please do not share the code with anyone outside of our room. I will approve anyone requesting access.
Feedback throughout assignments, as well as grades and comments, will be provided through Google Classroom (if the assignment is completed online/in a Google Doc). If there is a paper grade, such as a writing rubric, it will be sent home with your child. I ask that you not send it back signed at this time, as we are not utilizing 'Friday Folders like we have in the past.
Through email. As I see trends in student work, I notice work not being completed, I notice how amazing your child is 🙂, the assignment was completed beyond expectations, etc., I will do my very best to email you.
We are always looking for ways to add new and engaging books to our classroom library as a way to encourage reading. One way we can do this is by creating a classroom wish list full of a wide range of books. Check out the link below to access the list. We are also always looking for great book suggestions. Thank you!
