At the beginning of the school year, the students in our class come up with rules that they believe will make our classroom a safe and welcoming space that encourages learning. Usually these rules fall under...
Be safe
Be kind
Be responsible
Try your best everyday
I use the Class Dojo app for families to stay up to date on the fun and exciting things happening in our classroom! Here you will find updates, reminders, and pictures and videos of what we are up to during the school week!
Class Dojo will also be used as a behavior management system. Students will be awarded "Dojo points" when they display positive behavior in the classroom. You will be able to see your child's Dojo points- my hope is that you will join me in encouraging and celebrating your child's positive behavior! Each Friday students will have the opportunity to redeem their Dojo points for prizes at the "Dojo shop".
Due to school policy, Dojo messenger should not be used. With any questions or concerns, please send an email. I do not frequently check class dojo messages and will not be able to guarantee we can see your messages in a timely manner. This also makes it easy to include other staff members such as the school nurse, principal, or child study team in our communication when needed.
Each morning we will have a 10 minute snack break. Please send your child to school with a snack and a water bottle each day.
Their snack should be something small, nutritious, and easy to eat. For example; fruit, cheese sticks, crackers, a (nut-free) granola bar, a yogurt pouch, etc (please no candy or soda, juice should be saved for lunch). Please note that our classrooms remain nut-free, and anything with nuts should be saved for lunch. The MCS snack guidelines can be found here.
Please pack snack in the front pocket of your child’s backpack so they will know where to find their snack each morning and don't confuse snack with their lunch. We will not go in lunch boxes at snack time.
Their water bottle should have water-only, with an open/close spout, clearly labeled with your child’s name.
In Kindergarten, homework is very minimal! It should not take more than 10 minutes a night to complete. Homework is not graded, and students will not be penalized for not completing it.
Each night Monday-Thursday, students are asked to.....
*practice their weekly sight words
*Read weekly decodable reader aloud
We also have monthly family projects! These are seasonal, fun craft activities for the students to complete at home with their family and return to school.
In our classroom, we LOVE to celebrate birthdays! On your child's birthday, they will receive a birthday crown and sticker to wear, and a birthday pencil to use throughout the day! The principal also announces all student birthdays each day during morning announcements.
Due to school policy, we are not able to share birthday treats or food.
Instead, our classroom celebrates student birthdays with a "birthday book"! On your child's birthday they may bring in their favorite book from home to share with the class, and we will read it aloud. This is a wonderful way to encourage a love for reading while celebrating birthdays!
If your child has a summer birthday, they will be celebrated at the end of the year on our school-wide "un-birthdays" day!
To avoid hurt feelings, we ask that you only pass out birthday party invitations at school if the entire class is invited. Otherwise, please utilize the classroom directory made by the room parents to send invitations out privately. Thank you for understanding!
There are multiple opportunities throughout the school year for parents to get involved in the classroom!
Community Helpers- In the month of October, we learn about different community helpers. Throughout the month of October we invite parents and other family members to visit our classroom to teach the class about their job as a community helper.
Holidays Traditions- In the month of December, we learn about different holidays that are celebrated around the world in many different cultures. Throughout the month of December we invite parents to visit our classroom to teach the class about the holiday traditions they have at home.
Accidents happen... Sometimes, small children do not make it to the restroom in time. Please send a complete change of clothing inside a Ziploc or plastic bag and label it with your child's name. This bag will be kept in your child’s backpack at all times, in case it is needed. Please remember to swap the clothing out with the change of seasons or as your child grows sizes!
