PEER COUNSELOR EDUCATION
Tier III of the Peer Mediation Program
The purpose of the Peer Counseling course is to provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they learned in the introductory/advanced courses to educate and support their peers, mediate conflict situations, provide leadership and mentorship to the school community, and assist counseling staff in providing preventative and responsive services.
The course is designed to prepare student leaders that work together to promote a school culture in which all students feel safe, respected, and connected. When young people experience frustrations, worries, concerns, and other life events, they typically turn to their friends for help, advice, support, and assistance. Peer Counselors (PCs) actively utilize knowledge and skills in interpersonal dynamics, decision-making, and communication to serve in a variety of supportive functions, such as welcoming and assisting new students to Olympian, serving as peer mediators in peer-to-peer disputes, making presentations to the school community, designing school-wide activities and campaigns which support mental health and wellness, meeting with referred students, and assisting office staff. They will continue to participate in personal growth activities and training on relevant topics such as diversity, substance abuse prevention, anger and stress management, conflict resolution, and academic success skills. Our Peer Counselors are also required to be concurrently enrolled in our Advanced Peer Mediation course.
