School is beginning and you're enrolled in AP Government. You may be wondering about the course, what you should be prepared for, who is in your class, and all sorts of things. All of that will be worked out when we get back to school. But for now, I thought I'd give some really basic information for those of you checking things out early. I'll take this time to answer a few questions you might have.
What supplies do we need for this class?
A binder to organize class materials will be a huge help. While I do not have specific requirements, I suggest a 1 1/2" or 2" binder for this course. Seven tab dividers would be beneficial to you as well.
On some days we will need earbuds for video or audio assignments. I have sets some earbuds if you don't have any or forget on those days.
You will receive a text book that you will want to keep close by. Other than that, we will just need the basics such as pens, pencil and paper. That's it!
Is this class boring?
I'm assuming that you chose to take the AP level course in order to challenge yourself. At the same time, I understand that no one wants to be miserable going to class each day. I pride myself on trying to take material that at times can be somewhat boring or dry and making it exciting. So if you're curious, ask my former students! I think most will tell you that we learn a lot, but we have a good time doing it! I plan to bring this formula to our AP Gov class as well!
How is the workload?
I've been told that the workload in this class across the country is generally less than in other AP classes. However, understand that this is still an AP level class and it will require quite a commitment on your part. The greatest thing to understand right away is that "extra" assignments, such as reading assignments, note-taking/outlining, etc. which may not always be directly graded, are essential to your success in this class. This is not the place to try to take shortcuts!
Are you one of those teachers that are really strict about cell phone use?
Yes! I never want to see them. Keep them put away and we'll be fine!
That's it for now. If you have any questions before school starts, email me or use the "Contact Mr. Smith" form. I'm so excited to get this year started! See you soon!
