The second grading period begins with a study of the Progressive Era. In short, this is an era of progress. Middle-class reformers want to fix the issues that are hurting society.
There were many ills of society facing Progressives. Some focused on working conditions and ending child labor. Others attacked trusts and monopolies in order to create fair business competition. Many Progressives focused on social and political issues such as prohibition of alcohol, women's voting rights and ending political corruption.
This unit comes at a great time for our class. The issues the Progressives hope to correct are all things we spent the 1st quarter learning about. Students are already well-aware of the issues facing American society. In some cases, we have already drawn our own conclusions about how to address these issues. Now we get to discover how Progressives attacked these issues in their time.
