All students follow the new KS4 National Curriculum leading to Higher Level GCSE entry at the end of Year 11. Some students also study the FSMQ Additional Mathematics qualification and some students study the AQA Further Maths Level 2 qualification in Year 11, with students sitting the paper in June of Year 11.
For GCSE, the final grade will be based upon three written papers sat in the May/June of Year 11. There will be one non-calculator and two calculator papers. Each paper lasts one hour and thirty minutes.
The curriculum is divided into: number; algebra; ratio, proportion and rates of change; geometry and measures; probability and statistics. Pupils are taught to develop fluency, reason mathematically and solve problems. The GCSE course reflects and builds upon subject content taught in KS3 and provides a strong mathematical foundation for those who wish to go on to study mathematics at a higher level.
Pupils normally receive two homework tasks per week, each taking roughly forty five minutes. These may take the form of practicing skills, investigating and solving problems, researching unknown topics or completing exam papers.
There are numerous enrichment opportunities during Key Stage 4, including conferences and seminars, cross-curricular projects, individual and team competitions and the Intermediate Maths Challenge. There is also a senior student-run maths club.
Essential equipment at all times is a pen, pencil, ruler, scientific calculator and geometry set (including protractor and compasses). Example of calculator is Casio FX-83GTPLUS Scientific Calculator, costing approximately £7.00. Example of geometry set is Helix Oxford Maths Set, costing approximately £3.00.
We have subscribed to an online independent learning system called Dr Frost Maths, with videos and self marking questions. All students are asked to contribute a small amount towards this. As mentioned under homework, students are expected to be able to print materials at home or pay for printing at school.
The school provides a textbook in lessons. If students wish to purchase the textbook used during year 10 and 11 there is an opportunity during the first term of year 10. The cost of the textbook is £15. Parents will be informed when these are appropriate to purchase.
