BSc Global Sustainable Development (GSD) at the University of Warwick
Ellie Gavin
"Global Sustainable Development at Warwick is a very multifaceted degree, focusing on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. This means that there are many avenues that can be explored through individual research in modules. In the first year you study three core principles, economic, social and environmental, where no previous knowledge is needed, giving a brilliant basis to further study. Whilst GSD at Warwick has more options than some more traditional courses in terms of assignments, we still to do weekly readings of academic journals ready for discussion in interactive seminars, helping to build analytical and academic communication skills. Also in the first year, you choose four (out of eight) optional modules, which can be from both within and external to the GSD department, making it a very flexible degree. I enjoyed having this autonomy over my degree because it makes it seem more personal and based around my own growing interests. Another brilliant plus is that there are only two exams in GSD, both in the first year in core modules, and they are online, meaning that if you are not an exam-based person, there’s no need to stress.
One thing I love most about GSD at Warwick is the small cohort sizes, this means that not only is there always a friendly face in all lectures and seminars, but you also build better relationships with module leaders and your personal tutor. Whilst on some courses, interactions with staff is very limited, we are encouraged to speak to our teachers often, and our personal tutors check in constantly, especially in the first year.
GSD also promote the intercalated year option, where you add an extra year to the degree, either to spend a year abroad or to do a work placement - and this is very supported too. This is a very exciting opportunity, not only to broaden your academic and future prospects, but also for personal development! I am going to do a year abroad next year in The Netherlands, which I am really excited for as it gives me the opportunity to learn more about my subject from different points of view.
In general, I have really loved my time at Warwick so far, and feel that I have really developed as a person, both personally and academically. Although it is not for everyone, I think a campus-based uni is brilliant to help you settle in. At Warwick we have a large society and sports club atmosphere, which I would always recommend people to get involved in, as it is where I made some of my closest friends and means that I always see a friendly face on campus.
If you are interested in anything to do with GSD and Warwick, Warwick in general or anything sustainability-based then there are many ways to view the uni through the website. I am also very happy to answer any questions :). "
