We hope you all have had a good first six weeks back. It has certainly been a busy time with Year 11 mock exams, preparations for Year 10 as they headed off on the ski trip over the half-term break, Dance Live competition heats, trips and more. Here, we hope you will enjoy reading our updates and find some useful tips to help you relax over the next half-term in the lead up to spring.

We have had a jam-packed half-term, full of opportunities and outings for our pupils. We feel our young people are so lucky to have the chance to visit some of these amazing places and meet working professionals in a variety of industries. Next term, Year 9 will be visiting Bletchley Park and there are many more exciting days and weeks away approaching. Watch this space!
Mr Coleman and his Dance Live! team (Miss Evans, Miss Primmer, Mrs Bailey, Mrs Barnes, Miss Smith and Mr Redman) took 92 pupils to Portsmouth Guildhall on Wednesday 29th January to compete in the heats for the local dance competition. Swanmore faced six other schools/colleges and placed first on the evening. What an incredible achievement and experience for everyone involved. They will return to Portsmouth in April, with their Men in Black, 7-minute dance extravaganza, to try and win the trophy for 2025. We wish them all the luck!
SwanPride continues to meet on Mondays in the pupil centre. We are doing a drop-in session the first Monday of each month. The ambassadors sent out a quiz for the school relating to LGBTQ+ and the Greek mythology, which was a fun and interesting task to complete in tutor time.

The anti-bullying committee meets every Tuesday in the pupil centre. They discuss issues which have arisen in the week, try to solve problems individuals may be having and continue to spread the anti-bullying message around the school. They are accepting applications for new members currently; thank you to all those who have submitted your forms.

Pupils are invited to join our Neurodiversity Ambassadors group (NDA) on a Tuesday lunchtime in R02.
This is a group that will allow its members to connect with fellow peers (neurodiverse or not) and supportive allies. It aims to help its members to develop and hone new skills in a supportive and friendly environment, and to build confidence and pride in students’ neurodiverse identities. It would be lovely to see a group of like-minded pupils come together and join in with the fun and activities.

The wellbeing champions meet weekly on a Wednesday in the pupil centre, during tutor time.

So far this school year we've looked at recycling and specifically the recycling bins around site and where they're located. Both pupils and staff often seem unaware of exactly what can go in the bins. For example, on-site we can't recycle tissues, however there have been lots found in the recycling bins. Miss Massey presented an assembly which explained what can and can't be recycled at Swanmore and we helped make videos to explain the issues. We've also created posters to highlight the damaging effects of littering to wild animals on-site as well as Sammy the school dog. These will soon be displayed.
And lastly we took part in the RSPB annual School's bird watch again. We monitored the visiting birds outside R block and found that there was lots of house sparrows however compared to last year, but unfortunately didn't see any robins or pied wagtails which used to be quite common.
Miss Massey
Fake-news is a widespread issue in the digital world, and it's overwhelmingly likely that both children and adults will be exposed to it online. In fact, a study from the Alan Turing Institute has found that 94% of people in the UK have encountered misinformation on social media and that is only the ones who were aware of it!
However, while some fake news is shared mistakenly by well-meaning individuals, it is also shared by scammers and other cyber-criminals to lend legitimacy to their con. While this presents a clear risk to children and young people online, the question remains as to how we can protect them against such tactics. Young Carers group runs every Friday morning during tutor time, in the pupil centre. Pupils from across all year groups are welcome. It is a chance for young carers to meet and mingle, also to have some breakfast.

Starting from 25 February 2025, wearing jumpers will no longer be compulsory as part of the school uniform.
This decision comes after careful consideration and feedback from students, aiming to provide greater comfort and flexibility for our pupils.

YoungMinds and M&S are working together in order to help celebrate Mental Health Week and are looking for inspiring designs to feature on two special pieces in their 2025 YoungMinds Hello Yellow Kidswear collection – on a yellow sweatshirt and a yellow hoodie that will be sold in M&S stores and online.
So what would you say to a friend who needs you? How would you brighten their day? Whether it's words, drawings, or doodles, we’re looking for something that stands out and reminds everyone that one chat can change everything.
If you're aged 12-16, they'd love to see your ideas. You can design a hoodie or a sweatshirt, and they'll choose a lucky winner. The winner will have their design featured on their Hello Yellow pieces, with all profits supporting YoungMinds.
Be bold, be bright, and put what’s inside on the outside. Good Luck!

"Is eating healthy becoming a luxury? This week, we dive into why nutritious food is more expensive than ever and how to make eating well more affordable. Plus, fresh vs frozen food—does it really matter? We break down what’s worth spending on and where frozen might be the better option."
"Winchester Cathedral boasts a fascinating history, glimpses of which can be discovered as you explore the building. You'll find animals and beasts carved in stone and wood, mortuary chests containing the bones of Anglo Saxon kings and medieval stained glass shattered by Oliver Cromwell's troops. Walking through the length of the Cathedral's vast nave, looking up at the impressive vaulted ceiling is an experience that all ages will enjoy.
For older children, it's worth considering booking a tower tour. They carry an additional charge and a minimum age requirement of 12 years but climbing the turret, seeing the bell chamber, panoramic views from the top and a walk through the huge nave roof is an impressive experience that almost all kids enjoy the thrill of! Plus explore the crypt and in better weather the historic Inner Close too, to get a well-rounded experience of this historic building!"
