There is no such thing as an average student or average brain. We are all unique and have our own preferences, strengths, and areas for growth. In my mind, it is our differences that make our world interesting and make our teams stronger. A quote that has stuck with my since my teenage years from a Michelle Branch Song "Who wants to be ordinary in a crazy mixed up world". In my classroom we will celebrate our differences and I will work hard to provide a variety of opportunities to learn and demonstrate knowledge. Students will try out study methods this year to help figure out how their mind learns best.
Below are a few links to questionnaires we use in class, parents may find them interesting to take and compare results with your kids. We will complete the VARK during class and for those students interested in diving deeper they can complete the multiple intelligences or Myers Briggs, which many companies use to have more insight into their teams and employees.
This year we will work on developing growth mindset in our students as well as executive functioning skills. You can help reinforce this at home. One easy way to do this is to start changing your words of praise and feedback to be more growth oriented. Try to praise your child's effort or the process rather than the product or end grade. Here is a worksheet with some examples for parents from Mindset Works.
