KARTINI DAY ASSEMBLY
EY Kartini Day Assembly
Written by Ms. Yuyun
Hello, everyone.
Do you remember what we usually celebrate in April?
That’s right, it’s Kartini day!
The commemoration of Kartini day is usually celebrated on the 21st of April every year, but because we were still on Lebaran holiday, we celebrated it last Friday, April 28, 2023. R.A Kartini is a national hero who fights for the equality of women and men or also known as women's emancipation. It is through Kartinis’ spirit that makes us enthusiastic in commemorating this special day.
To pay tribute to Kartini day at school, the EY students prepared an extraordinary performance. We started with the Indonesia Raya song where the children sang solemnly and continued with a dance performance from the Nursery which received a standing ovation. Moreover, the Pre-K and K1 classes showed wonderful Soleram dances. The event concluded with an amazing performance from the K2s, who enthusiastically played the xylophone as the introduction to the song with a melodious chorus, "Ibu Kita Kartini".
Keep up the learning spirit, EY!

“Ibu telah menyekolahkan perempuan dan telah menginspirasi saya dan orang-orang di luar sana... Semua yang kau ajarkan sangatlah berarti untuk kami.”
Surat untuk Ibu Kartini by Joannes.
The above is an excerpt from a personal letter written by a Grade 4 Elementary School student to Kartini. This year's celebration of Kartini's Day feels different because we can see the admiration of elementary school children for what Kartini has done to defend women. The celebration also felt more meaningful with the appearance of Grades 9 and 10 as guest stars. They sang the song Ibu Kita Kartini along with the 5th graders as the opening act. Then there was a brief explanation of Ibu Kartini's biography by Wen Jie and Hae Yun.
This was followed by the reading of Ibu Kartini's poetry by Grade 3 and the reading of a letter to Ibu Kartini by Joannes, Grace, and Jet. The programme was closed beautifully by Grade 4 students playing Hulusi instruments.
What a meaningful and personal celebration. Happy Kartini's Day!
Toddler Literacy
Written by Ms. Ann
The toddlers were given plenty of opportunities to learn a new set of letters while exploring and expanding their vocabulary. Engaging in fun activities, the children were amazed by the simple experiments and hands-on activities. For example, when the class learned the letter /z/, they listened to the story "Dear Zoo" and explored animal toys that could be found in the zoo. Similarly, when learning the letter /w/, the class happily explored a watermelon. Additionally, when learning the letter /v/, the children scooped soil into a pot, spread mung beans, and watered them by themselves. They were even involved in making the volcano erupt and conducted a volcano experiment, which left the children stunned.
These activities not only thrilled the children but also strengthened their literacy skills while developing communication skills. In addition to learning letters through fun and interactive activities, the children also practiced essential skills such as zipping and unzipping their own bags and walking on a zigzag line. These activities helped the children develop important motor skills and independence.

K1 Field Trip
Written by Ms. Klara
Nothing beats an exciting hands-on experience to deepen learning. The magic of a field trip isn’t just the subject. It’s the break in routine and adventure that opens up children’s minds to new things. The Kindergarten 1 students had their second field trip to Bintaro Mini Farm. The little ones were thrilled to ride the bus once again. They buckled up and off we went!
Bintaro Mini Farm has dozens of different types of animals, with thousands of them and most of them are farmed. The children were able to observe the process of the mother’s laying eggs, hatching, breastfeeding, and so on. We did not just look around; the children were able to interact, learn, take pictures, and play with the animals. On top of that, our guide, Mr. Cucun explained in a fun way about each of the animals, their origins, how to distinguish male and female, what they eat, unique things about them, and how we can hold and care for them.
We went back to school exhausted but we have built long lasting memories.

Could you recall the joy of running outdoors, feeling the cool breeze against your skin while pulling the kites up in the air?
On a bright and windy day, the K2 students had a blast. What could be more fun than getting outside to make a colorful kite dance in the breeze? Tapping creativity, the kids worked together in pairs to decorate their own kites. Layang-layang or kites, are very much a part of Indonesian heritage. Nowadays, layang-layang is made for performances, games, or festivals. With much excitement, the students dashed through the field and made their way to keep their kites in flight. Kite flying was indeed a collaborative activity where one gives a little upward push while the other pulls it until the kite gains altitude. It took them a while to learn the technique but the fun in their faces was simply priceless.
Grade 1 Art
Written by Mr. Ezard
This week, the G1 students created their own robot from recycled materials! It is a part of term 4 topic which is basic sculpture, and we tried the three-dimensional (3D) art. They collected the recyclable materials they could find at home, such as plastic bottles, cereal boxes, paper cups, etc. and brought them to school. It was an exciting experience for the students to create their own robot. First, they sketched the robot and then started to combine all the materials to make the robot. The result was amazing; the robot came in many shapes and sizes, based on the students' creativity and imagination. The students also learned about being responsible to keep the environment clean.
Grade 2 English Language
Written by Mr. Marc
Grade 2 students are working hard, having fun, and learning a lot this year. The class has put extra attention into the class concept of “Respect”. Students researched the meaning, read different definitions, watched examples of respect in action, and created their own role playing situations of respect in action.
This led to the class deciding to write lyrics and sing a song about respect to present to the whole Elementary School in April.
The Grade 2 class wrote the lyrics to go with the tune “Wellerman” in the style of Jonathan.
The Grade 2 were brave and delivered a string performance with a strong message: let’s be kind and mindful to show respect.
By the end of the song, the whole audience was singing along with the G2 students. After the performance, a grade 1 student said, “I liked how the words went to that Tik Tok pirate son." What a fun community experience with an essential concept for SWA. Respect.
Grade 3 Science
Written by Ms. Shirley
Properties of Light
In Grade 3 science class, the students used a light box and optical sets to observe the different properties of light. They observed that light travels in a straight light and how light is reflected, refracted, absorbed, and transmitted through different objects as shown in their activities below.
To wrap up this lesson, students brainstormed the topic for their imaginative story and performed in their shadow play. In this shadow play, students have shown an excellent understanding of how light interacts with transparent, translucent and opaque material.
The students understand that the shadows change in size, position, and opacity as they change the position and intensity of the light source and as well as changing the angles and distances between the puppet, light source, and screen. Understanding these principles is essential in the study of light and how it interacts with objects, and it can also help students develop critical thinking skills as they analyse and predict how shadows will behave in different scenarios.
Grade 4 ICT
Written by Mr. Ciaran
Grade 4 have recently been developing text-based role-playing games using Python. The students have learnt about how to use variables for various purposes in the games- for example to remember players names, if objects have already been picked up, and which area of the game world players are in at a given point.
Text-based role-playing games provide students with opportunities to develop their coding and writing skills in a creative way. They also encourage collaboration, as students play-test one another’s games, and help each other troubleshoot bugs. Students have created games exploring a variety of different environments, including beaches, haunted houses, and even SWA itself!
Students are reminded that, as our Python unit will end soon, they will be required to bring their Micro:bits, cables (and adapters if required) to every lesson from 9/5/23 onwards.
Grade 4 review Python terminology, before diving into coding!
Raphael created an RPG allowing players to explore a Haunted House.
Students in G4 and G5 must bring their Micro:bits, cables (and adapters if needed) to every lesson until the end of term 4.
Grade 5 PE
Written by Mr. Dominic
Grade 5 students recently took part in several fitness tests as part of their physical education curriculum. These tests included the sit and reach, ruler drop, and standing long jump. Each test measures a different aspect of physical fitness and helps students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
These fitness tests are important for students because they provide an objective measurement of their physical fitness and can help motivate them to improve. By understanding their strengths and areas for improvement, students can work on developing a balanced fitness routine that includes stretching, cardiovascular exercise, and strength training. These skills are not only important for physical health but can also improve mental health and academic performance. Overall, the grade 5 students showed impressive results in these tests, highlighting the importance of physical education in their curriculum.
